Bollywood 2025 Report Card: Hits, Flops & Surprises

The last few years have been full of ups and downs for the Hindi film industry, but with the first six months of 2026, Bollywood has once again found the confidence to make big movies. Even though there were few Fridays when there were lots of reasons to celebrate, Hindi films have had enough successes at the box office to give theatres, distributors, and fans hope for the future. There was enough success from blockbusters to sleeper hits and promising upcoming films in the second half of 2026 for the industry to feel positive going forward.

By far the biggest story in the Hindi film industry has been Dhurandhar: The Revenge. Ranveer Singh’s action movie not only had great success at the box office, but it broke records. The film grossed an unprecedented total of Rs. 1,845.81 crores globally, becoming the highest-grossing Hindi film to date and setting new records for opening day and opening weekend gross. Its impressive success has also influenced many other films in Bollywood, as many producers have strategically moved their release dates because of Dhurandhar’s box office strength.

In addition to Dhurandhar’s success, there were many more films this past six months that have succeeded in theaters. This was the case with Border 2, the sequel to border, and Bhooth Bangla, which continued to entertain audiences by reuniting Akshay Kumar and Priyadarshan. Films like Cocktail 2, Pati Patni Aur Woh Do, Main Vaapas Aaunga, have also enjoyed box office success.

The first half of Bollywood films in 2026 was not without its good releases where they were promoted successfully with a large number of them not connecting with their audience. Moreover, there is a significant difference between winners and losers at the box office and out of this gap the trend from the past several years is that only films that generate excitement among audiences can be expected to have a successful theatrical run.

Trade experts see one of the major key points as that event cinema and great stories still drive foot traffic to theatres. Additionally, large-scale films that contain strong word of mouth and visual spectacle are the safest bet, while mid-range budget films need an even greater strong content and marketing to distinguish themselves in this increasing competition.

Fortunately the second half of 2026 holds great promise as well as the next half of the year has a strong slate of films like Alpha, Drishyam 3, Love and War along with a large number of other films have generated a lot of pre-release interest from moviegoers. If these films meet their expectations, then Bollywood should finish 2026 off very strongly like it did in 2025.

In summary, the first half of this year has been better than most expected with one blockbuster, handful solid hits and audience awareness has grown considerably.
