MCA launches player contract system

In doing so, it becomes the first state association to officially introduce a formal player contract system

A New Era of Financial Security and Professionalism Dawns for Mumbai’s Cricketing Icons, In a landmark move that cements its status as a pioneer of Indian domestic cricket, the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) has officially introduced a formal Player Contract System.

This progressive initiative makes Mumbai the first state association in India to provide its players with structured annual retainers, ushering in a professional era designed to safeguard the future of its talent. By formalizing these contracts, the MCA aims to provide a safety net for cricketers on the cusp of national honors, ensuring they can focus entirely on their craft without financial distractions.

The contract hierarchy: Understanding the grades

The new framework categorizes players into three distinct tiers based on their performance, fitness levels, and the recommendations of the Selection Committee:

Grade A: Players will receive between 12,00,000 and 20,00,000 per annum.

Grade B: Players will receive between 8,00,000 and 12,00,000 per annum.

Grade C: Players will receive a fixed retainer of 8,00,000 per annum.

These annual retainers are in addition to standard match fees, daily allowances, and performance-based incentives already provided under MCA policies.

Why this matters

The MCA has outlined several core objectives that this system is designed to achieve:

Guaranteed Stability: Providing a predictable income to domestic stalwarts and emerging stars.

Elite Standards: Linking contracts to strict fitness benchmarks and consistent performance metrics.

Talent Retention: Preventing the “brain drain” of talent by making the Mumbai cricket ecosystem more lucrative and professional.

Pathway to Excellence: Creating a clear, structured pipeline for players transitioning from domestic cricket to the international stage. “We are proud to be the first association to implement a player contract system—a progressive step that will provide greater security, structure, and growth opportunities for our Mumbai players. It reflects our vision to strengthen the foundation of Mumbai cricket.” Said Mr. Ajinkya Naik, President, MCA

Put together, this initiative will spur serve as a shot in the arm for Mumbai, and by extension Indian, cricket.
