Grand Green Network to Rise in Dharavi: Mithi River Promenade to Feature 40,000 Trees

Mumbai: Under the Dharavi Redevelopment Project, encouraging news has emerged for Mumbaikars, particularly the residents of Dharavi. As the project transforms the face of Dharavi, a strong emphasis is being placed on maintaining ecological balance. The rejuvenation of the Mithi River will serve as the core pillar of this entire initiative, supported by a massive plantation of 40,000 trees.

As part of this green transformation, a grand and attractive 3.3 km public promenade will be developed along the banks of the Mithi River, extending from the Matunga Culvert directly to the river mouth. Open to all Mumbaikars, this waterfront will feature viewing decks, cafes and dedicated spaces for various cultural activities.

A Revamped Mithi Riverfront

To strengthen the riverbank and enhance its natural beauty, native tree species and pollution absorbing plants will be cultivated. Additionally, modern sustainable measures such as permeable paving and bioswales will be implemented to manage rainwater, increase groundwater recharge, and restore the health of the river ecosystem.

This riverfront will connect directly to a 15 meter wide ‘Green Spine’ designed for pedestrians and cyclists, as well as a large Central Park.

Fivefold Reforestation Drive

To improve air quality and mitigate the urban heat island effect in Dharavi and its surrounding areas, 40,000 trees will be rejuvenated and planted in phases. This number is nearly five times the estimated tree felling required for the redevelopment. Furthermore, due to space constraints within the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) limits, plans are underway to plant 200,000 compensatory trees across the broader Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR).

30,000 Trees Already Planted in Palghar

As part of the compensatory afforestation effort, 30,000 trees have already been successfully planted in Chahade village, Palghar district. The target for the current monsoon season is set at 75,000 trees. Adani Navbharat Developers Private Limited (ANDPL) will oversee the entire plantation drive along with a five-year maintenance commitment. Environmental consultancy firm Terracon has been appointed to monitor the project, with survival audit reports set to be submitted every six months.
