The Government of Maharashtra has announced that effective May 1 (Maharashtra Day), proficiency in the Marathi language will be mandatory for all licensed auto-rickshaw and taxi drivers across the state. The decision was confirmed by Transport Minister Pratap Sarnaik.
As part of the implementation, the Motor Transport Department will conduct a statewide verification drive through its 59 Regional and Sub-Regional Transport Offices During this campaign, officials will assess whether drivers can read and write Marathi Drivers found lacking basic knowledge of the language will face cancellation of their licenses.
Minister Sarnaik stated that knowledge of the local language Marathi has always been a requirement for obtaining a commercial driving license in the state. However, authorities have received numerous complaints, particularly from major urban centers such as the Mumbai Metropolitan Region, Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, and Nagpur, that many licensed drivers are unable or unwilling to communicate with passengers in Marathi.
He further emphasized that learning the language of the region in which one works is a fundamental responsibility. While pride in one’s mother tongue is important, respecting and adopting the local language of the state where one conducts business is equally essential.
The Minister reiterated that from May 1 onwards, all licensed auto and taxi drivers must be able to read and write Marathi. Strict action, including cancellation of licenses, will be taken against those who fail to comply. Additionally, transport officials found issuing licenses in violation of these rules will also face stringent disciplinary action.
