Marathi Language Knowledge Made Mandatory for Maharashtra Auto, Taxi Drivers
Mumbai, August 19: Practical knowledge of Marathi will be mandatory for auto-rickshaw and taxi drivers in Maharashtra from August 20, Transport Minister Pratap Sarnaik said on Tuesday.
Drivers who do not have practical Marathi knowledge will initially be given one month to learn the language. Failure to comply could lead to suspension of their badge for up to three months, while continued refusal to learn Marathi may result in cancellation of the badge and driving permit.
The minister said the decision is based on rules in force since 1989 and follows legal provisions introduced on August 12, 2026. He clarified that the government does not intend to take away anyone’s livelihood, but wants drivers to respect Maharashtra’s language and culture.
Around 1.65 lakh non-Marathi-speaking auto and taxi drivers have undergone Marathi training during a 105-day language campaign.
For new permits and badges, RTO officials will assess drivers’ practical Marathi through direct interaction, with the process video-recorded. Only drivers demonstrating adequate knowledge will receive badges.
Authorities have also been instructed to verify complaints regarding fake domicile certificates. The government has allocated around ₹57 crore through the Anand Dighe Welfare Corporation for various welfare schemes benefiting auto and taxi drivers.
