Maha Walkathon Takes a Step Towards Water-Secure Maharashtra
MUMBAI, AUGUST 21: The Maharashtra government organised a state-wide ‘Maha Walkathon – Walk for Water’ on August 21 to spread awareness about soil and water conservation and encourage public participation in building a water-secure Maharashtra.
Speaking at the state-level event near Worli’s Sagar Point, Soil and Water Conservation Minister Sanjay Rathod said more than three lakh citizens participated in walkathons held across all 36 districts. He said the initiative was inspired by the contribution of former Maharashtra Chief Minister late Sudhakarrao Naik, whose birth anniversary is observed as Water Conservation Day.
Rathod urged citizens, particularly youth, to actively participate in water conservation efforts and highlighted the importance of protecting soil and saving water for future generations.
The three-kilometre walkathon was held from the Aarey Milk Colony area to Madraswadi. Legislative Council Deputy Chairman Sachin Ahir, Minister of State Indranil Naik, senior officials, students, citizens and several personalities from the fields of cinema, sports and music participated in the event.
Participants also took a pledge for soil and water conservation, while a symbolic water worship ceremony was held during the programme.
