Education with Employment in Focus: Maharashtra Approves New Skill-Based Diploma Courses for Youth

New Skill-Oriented Diploma Courses Approved Across the state

Major Decision by the Directorate of Technical Education

Mumbai, August 21: In a major step towards providing employment-oriented and industry-relevant education to young people, the Higher and Technical Education Department of Maharashtra has approved the introduction of government-recognised skill-based diploma courses under the Maharashtra State Board of Technical Education (MSBTE).

The short-term vocational courses will be introduced from the academic year 2026-27 on a permanent unaided basis, according to the government decision.

The approval has been granted to eligible institutions following physical inspections by state-level and expert committees. The committees assessed the institutions’ infrastructure, academic standards and relevant documentation before granting permission to commence the courses.

As part of the decision, Yash Technical and Engineering College in Jalna has been permitted to introduce two full-time programmes an Advanced Diploma in Fire Safety and Industrial Environmental Engineering, with a duration of one year, and a Diploma in Fire Service Engineering, with a duration of two years. Each course will have an intake capacity of 40 students.

The government has clarified that the approved programmes will operate entirely on a permanent unaided basis. No government grant or fee reimbursement will be applicable to these courses.

The institutions have also been directed to strictly adhere to the prescribed fee structure. Any institution found charging fees over and above the authorised amount will face stringent action under the Capitation Fee Act.

As part of the approval conditions, institutions must provide updated laboratories, well-equipped libraries and qualified regular teaching staff appointed on appropriate pay scales. They will also be required to strictly comply with anti-ragging laws and regulations.

Admissions and examinations for the approved programmes will be conducted under the direct supervision and control of the Maharashtra State Board of Technical Education.

The move is expected to strengthen the link between technical education and employment by equipping students with specialised skills in areas such as fire safety, industrial safety and environmental management, while creating additional opportunities for youth seeking industry-focused career paths in Maharashtra.
