India’s fast-growing nuclear energy sector is opening new avenues for global partnerships in manufacturing, technology transfer, supply chain integration and advanced scientific research. Union Minister Jitendra singh said India has enacted the SHANTI Act, 2025, a landmark reform aimed at increasing private sector participation including foreign investment in the nuclear energy sector.
The Minister stated that the new law is expected to create a more favourable environment for investments, industrial partnerships, manufacturing collaborations and technology cooperation under India’s Nuclear Energy Mission. He added that the implementation framework under the Act is currently being finalised to further boost collaborative opportunities. Dr. Singh also highlighted India’s plans to develop Small Modular Reactors (SMRs), supported by a government allocation of nearly ₹20,000 crore. He said there is immense potential for India, U.S. cooperation in advanced fields such as micro reactors, AI driven nuclear safety systems, scientific computing, nuclear energy modelling and institutional capacity building.
During the discussions, both sides reviewed progress on several ongoing India, U.S. projects, including the proposed Westinghouse electric company AP1000 nuclear project at kovvada collaboration under the Indo, U.S. Civil Nuclear Energy Working Group (CNEWG) hydrogen production and integrated energy systems, artificial intelligence and machine learning applications, rare earth cooperation and advanced superconducting proton accelerator technologies through Fermilab partnerships.
The meeting also discussed developments in the LIGO-India project, jointly implemented by India’s Department of Atomic Energy and Department of Science & Technology in collaboration with the U.S. based ligo laboratory and the National Science Foundation. Approved with a budget of ₹2,600 crore, the project is considered one of the most important scientific collaborations between India and the United States.
The interaction concluded with both countries reaffirming their commitment to strengthening practical, industry led and mutually beneficial cooperation in clean energy, nuclear technology, advanced manufacturing and innovation driven sectors.
