Congress Launches ‘City Transformation Group’ Campaign to Address Urban Issues
Mumbai, August 18, 2026: With rapid urbanisation putting growing pressure on civic infrastructure, the Maharashtra Pradesh Congress Committee has announced the launch of a statewide ‘City Transformation Group’ campaign to highlight and address key urban issues.
The campaign will be inaugurated on August 20, coinciding with the birth anniversary of former Prime Minister and Bharat Ratna Rajiv Gandhi, across all municipal corporation areas in Maharashtra.
Congress said citizens continue to face problems including poor roads, inadequate drinking water, healthcare and education facilities, waste management, traffic congestion, parking shortages and pollution. The party alleged that the state government and municipal administrations have failed to plan adequately for expanding cities and are spending crores in the name of urban development without addressing people’s basic needs.
Senior Congress leader and AICC secretary Sachin Sawant has been appointed chairman of the City Transformation Group, while Sangram Khopde will serve as its coordinator.
District Congress committees will hold press conferences across municipal corporation areas on August 20 to announce the campaign’s programmes and roadmap.
