BJP sweeps Bengal: Who’s in CM race?

The outcome of the West Bengal Assembly Elections 2026 has triggered a major political shift with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) moving toward a decisive majority in the state. This positions the party to form its first ever government in West Bengal potentially ending the long standing rule of Mamata Banerjee.

With the victory nearly certain attention has now turned to a crucial question: Who will be the BJP’s Chief Ministerial pick?

No Pre-Declared CM Candidate

The BJP contested the election without naming a chief ministerial face relying instead on a collective leadership approach. The final decision will be taken by the party’s top leadership including Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah.

Suvendu Adhikari Leads the Race

Suvendu Adhikari has emerged as the frontrunner for the top post. Currently serving as the Leader of the Opposition he played a pivotal role in the party’s campaign and is widely credited with strengthening the BJP’s grassroots presence across the state. His political experience and influence make him the leading contender.

Other Names Under Consideration

Several other leaders are also being discussed within party circles:

Dilip Ghosh – A senior leader and former state president with strong organizational experience.

Samik Bhattacharya – The current state chief known for his role in expanding the party base.

Agnimitra Paul – A prominent young woman leader representing a new generation.

Rupa Ganguly – A popular public figure with wide recognition.

Swapan Dasgupta – Known for his intellectual and policy oriented approach.

Key Factors Behind the Final Choice

The BJP leadership is expected to consider several factors before announcing the Chief Minister:

Performance and contribution during the elections

Regional and social representation

Administrative capability and public appeal

Strategic political messaging for the future

Possibility of a Surprise Decision

The BJP has often surprised observers by appointing unexpected leaders as Chief Ministers in other states. A similar move in West Bengal remains a possibility.

While Suvendu Adhikari currently appears to be the strongest candidate the final decision will be made after internal consultations and a meeting of BJP legislators. An official announcement is expected soon.
