Lata Mangeshkar University of Health Sciences’ to Be Established in Nagpur

State Cabinet Grants Approval for New Private Health Sciences University

Mumbai: In a significant move to expand health education in Maharashtra, the State Cabinet has approved the establishment of the ‘Lata Mangeshkar University of Health Sciences’, a private health sciences university in Nagpur. The ambitious proposal was approved at the State Cabinet meeting held on Monday.

The VSPM Academy of Higher Education, a reputed educational institution in Nagpur, had submitted a proposal to the State Government for establishing a private health sciences university in the city. The new university is expected to create wider opportunities for students from Vidarbha and other parts of Maharashtra to pursue quality medical education.

The university will offer undergraduate, postgraduate and super-speciality programmes in major healthcare disciplines, including medicine, dentistry, physiotherapy and nursing. The institution also has a modern, well-equipped 1,138-bed hospital, which will provide students with extensive opportunities for practical clinical training while also benefiting patients in the region through access to healthcare services.

An inspection committee had conducted a detailed assessment of the proposal in accordance with the norms prescribed by the National Medical Commission (NMC). Following the committee’s favourable recommendation, the State Cabinet approved the establishment of the university.

‘Dr Balasaheb Vikhe Patil University’ in Ahilyanagar

Along with the Nagpur university, the State Cabinet has also approved the establishment of another private health sciences university, the ‘Dr Balasaheb Vikhe Patil University’, in Ahilyanagar (Ahmednagar).

The university will be operated by the Dr Vitthalrao Vikhe Patil Foundation and will offer undergraduate, postgraduate and super-speciality medical programmes. It will also have a well-equipped 830-bed hospital, providing students with opportunities for practical medical training and patients with advanced healthcare facilities.

The establishment of these two universities is expected to give a major impetus to health education, medical training and research in Maharashtra, while creating additional opportunities for students aspiring to pursue careers in the healthcare sector.
