ICICI Life Names Sidhartha Mishra MD & CEO

For Sidhartha Mishra, the journey to the corner office at ICICI Prudential Life Insurance began far away from Mumbai’s financial corridors.

It began in Bhubaneswar, where Mishra completed his education before joining ICICI Bank as a management trainee in 1998. Nearly three decades later, he is set to take charge of one of India’s largest private-sector life insurers.

ICICI Prudential Life has appointed Mishra as its Chief Operating Officer with effect from October 6, and as an additional director and Managing Director & CEO from October 14, subject to regulatory approval. He will succeed Anup Bagchi, who is leaving ICICI Life after three years to take over as MD & CEO of HDFC Bank.

The appointment is significant partly because of how closely Mishra’s career has followed the evolution of modern Indian banking.

He began at the branch level, becoming a deputy branch manager and subsequently running a branch in Visakhapatnam. From there, his career moved through regional and zonal retail banking roles across West Bengal, Odisha, Chhattisgarh, Andhra Pradesh, and Telangana. By 2018, he had become retail business head for East and Andhra Pradesh. That experience gave Mishra a close view of the customer and the distribution engine that sits at the heart of financial services. His career then took a decidedly digital turn.

Since July 2024, Mishra has headed digital channels and partnerships, voice channel, customer service, NRI, and IFIG businesses at ICICI Bank. In other words, the executive who started by managing a physical branch eventually found himself responsible for some of the bank’s most important customer-facing and technology-led businesses. That combination is now coming with him to ICICI Life.

Mishra holds a Bachelor of Science degree and a postgraduate diploma in management, specialising in finance, from Utkal University in Bhubaneswar. He brings more than 26 years of banking experience, almost entirely within the ICICI ecosystem.

His appointment also represents a continuation of an established leadership philosophy at ICICI Life. The insurer has repeatedly drawn senior leadership from within the wider ICICI Group, with executives such as Shikha Sharma, Sandeep Bakshi, NS Kannan, and Bagchi having held the top position.

Mishra’s elevation therefore represents continuity, but his background also brings a potentially useful emphasis on digital distribution and customer engagement.

That will matter as the insurance industry enters another period of change. Regulators are examining distribution economics and commission structures, while insurers are looking to broaden their channels beyond traditional models. ICICI Life has also been working in a market where bancassurance remains important, making Mishra’s experience across banking partnerships, digital channels, and customer service particularly relevant.

He will inherit a business that Bagchi leaves in a stronger position. During Bagchi’s tenure, ICICI Life crossed ₹10,000 crore in annualised premium equivalent in FY25, while profit after tax rose substantially. The board, in acknowledging his departure, described the company as having emerged as a resilient franchise during his tenure.

Mishra’s challenge now is to build on that platform while bringing his own priorities to the business.

There is an interesting symmetry to the transition. Bagchi spent decades inside ICICI before moving to lead HDFC Bank. Mishra, in turn, is moving from ICICI Bank into the group’s insurance business. Both appointments underline the depth of India’s financial-services talent pool, where senior executives are increasingly moving across institutions and business lines rather than remaining confined to a single vertical.

For Mishra, though, the symbolism is more personal. The management trainee who began his career in 1998, moved through branches and regional businesses, and eventually took charge of digital and customer-facing operations is now preparing to lead an entire insurance company.

It is a career built less around one spectacular leap than around a steady accumulation of responsibility. And perhaps that makes his elevation particularly fitting for a business whose success ultimately depends on understanding customers, distribution, and trust at scale.
