India has confirmed two cases of the Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) in Karnataka, raising concerns over the spread of this respiratory virus. The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) confirmed the cases, which were identified during routine surveillance for respiratory illnesses. These cases involve two infants from Bengaluru who were both diagnosed after showing symptoms of bronchopneumonia.
The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) confirmed on Monday that two cases of Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) have been detected in Karnataka. This discovery comes as part of ICMR’s ongoing surveillance efforts for respiratory viruses nationwide, as reported by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.
The first case involved a three-month-old female infant who had a history of bronchopneumonia. She was admitted to Baptist Hospital in Bengaluru, where she was diagnosed with HMPV. After treatment, the infant has been discharged. The second case involved an eight-month-old male infant who was admitted to the same hospital on January 3. He too had a history of bronchopneumonia and tested positive for HMPV. The infant is currently recovering.
The Ministry emphasized that neither of the patients had a history of international travel, highlighting that these infections were likely local.
Karnataka Issues Health Advisory
In response to the HMPV cases, the Karnataka government has issued a health advisory to safeguard public health. The government confirmed that no additional HMPV cases have been reported in the state as of now. Additionally, data analysis from the Department of Health and Family Welfare shows no significant increase in cases of respiratory infections like the common cold, influenza-like illness (ILI), or severe acute respiratory infections (SARI) in December 2024 compared to the same period last year.
