Inside Kareena Kapoor and Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s explosive 25-year fallout amid reunion buzz 

Fans of Bollywood have been wondering for the past 25 years the reason as to why Kareena Kapoor Khan and Sanjay Leela Bhansali have never worked together. Both successful in Hindi cinema, they surprisingly have not worked on any projects together. The main explanation traces back to the casting controversy behind the movie Devdas. New information that has emerged suggests that the two may be reuniting once again for a movie with Dhanush under the direction of Sanjay Leela Bhansali.  

If this collaboration goes through, it will also mark the end of the longest feud in Bollywood history.  

Going back to the late 1990s, it was when Sanjay Leela Bhansali was looking for a cast for Devdas that Kareena was thought to be the first choice of Bhansali to play Parvati (Paro). Kareena had not even stepped into Bollywood but was already being talked about in industry circles. There have been many reports stating that Kareena underwent costume trials and look tests for the movie. However, it was later decided that Aishwarya Rai would be playing the character. 

The abrupt alteration supposedly took Kareena and her relatives completely by surprise since the film was already at a more advanced stage of costuming. The part soon turned into Aishwarya Rai’s famous role. 

Kareena didn’t hide her disappointment 

Kareena spoke openly about her feelings in the aftermath of the incident. As it is said, Bhansali fooled her by presenting her with promises before he replaced her. On the other hand, she claimed that she does not regret the loss of this film as she believes that once some opportunities are lost, other chances come around.  

At that point, this statement became the talk of the town and eventually started the uneasy relations between the actress and the director. 

Bhansali’s response 

Sanjay Leela Bhansali was reluctant to comment on the incident. In further interviews, the director explained that the process of casting is not stable, emphasizing the fact that one cannot be offered a role before everything is completely confirmed. The director meant Aishwarya Rai was absolutely the right choice for the character of Paro.  

Bhansali didn’t want to deepen the scandal further, however, he managed to end the prospects of collaborating in the nearest future. 

Several opportunities, but no collaboration 

Interestingly, Devdas is not the only time when Kareena and Bhansali almost worked together. Over the years, there have been many instances where Kareena’s name popped up in connection to various Bhansali movies like Bajirao Mastani in its early stages. But none of those discussions ever led to an actual movie being created. 

Even as Bhansali worked with other stars, like Deepika Padukone and Ranveer Singh, Kareena remained one of the few stars of her generation who have never appeared in a Sanjay Leela Bhansali film. 

This absence has led to one of the most talked about collaborations that must have happened in Bollywood. 

Have they moved on? 

Over the years, there have been no problems, even though there was a bit of a controversy between the two. Kareena has not spoken about previously working in Devdas while Bhansali has focused mainly on his works. 

Reunion rumours are back 

The long-forgotten chapter has again come to light after new reports suggested that Bhansali approached Kareena Kapoor for a prominent role in his new film featuring Dhanush in the lead.  

While the details of the reportedly happening project state that it will combine mythology with jungle adventure, no official announcement has been made regarding it. As of now, none of the parties have confirmed the casting. In the case the reports prove to be true, it will finally unite two of the biggest names in Bollywood after over twenty years of speculation. 

Why this reunion matters 

While Bollywood has seen many infamous reunions, this one is probably one of the most long-awaited exceptions in the industry. From a casting controversy surrounding Devdas and ending up being one of the most talked-about missed collaborations, over 25 years have passed; and today, it finally has a chance to come true.
