Global AI Companies Turn to India as Data Centre Demand Surges
Shortages of power and capacity elsewhere are pushing international players toward Indian facilities, giving the country a larger role in the world’s AI infrastructure.
As AI adoption speeds up worldwide, overseas AI companies are increasingly booking space in Indian data centres to meet their computing needs. Delays in securing power and capacity in other markets are part of the reason, and firms are responding by spreading their infrastructure across more regions.
Industry executives say Indian facilities now run AI workloads for international clients, a role that goes beyond serving customers at home.
Sunil Gupta, Co-founder, CEO and Managing Director of Yotta Data Services, said his company already hosts such customers and has signed contracts for substantial computing capacity. He noted that foreign AI businesses use India-based infrastructure to power services aimed at markets outside the country.
Operators describe demand that scales quickly. Sridhar Pinnapureddy, Founder and CEO of CtrlS Datacenters, pointed out that a customer’s initial requirement of about 20 megawatts can grow to 100 MW or more in short order.
Meeting that demand takes serious planning. AI applications are more computing-intensive, which calls for higher power densities, advanced cooling, available land and dependable power transmission. Operators also have to build in room for further expansion.
The trend presents India with a chance to strengthen its standing in global digital infrastructure. As AI firms compete for computing resources, the country’s ability to deliver scalable, power-efficient and reliable data centres could become a deciding factor in winning international business.
With AI workloads growing in size and complexity, India’s data centre sector looks set to play a bigger part in supporting the global AI economy.
