‘Traditions, Folk Arts and Tribal Heritage Must Thrive in the Digital Age’: Sunetra Pawar

Mumbai, August 7: Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) national president and Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Sunetra Ajit Pawar said that traditional customs, dialects, folk arts, folk music and handicrafts must continue to flourish even in the digital era, stressing that preserving cultural heritage is a collective responsibility.

She was speaking at the inauguration of the three-day ‘Vanrang Tribal Cultural Festival’, organised by Maharashtra Food and Drug Administration Minister Narhari Zirwal on the occasion of World Tribal Day at Yashwantrao Chavan Pratishthan in Mumbai.

Sunetra Pawar said tribal communities have played a crucial role in protecting forests, conserving water resources and safeguarding biodiversity. She noted that their traditional way of life has long promoted harmony with nature and offers valuable lessons in the context of climate change and global warming.

She also highlighted the contribution of tribal leaders such as Bhagwan Birsa Munda, Rani Durgavati and Maharashtra revolutionary Raghogi Bhangare to India’s history and freedom struggle.

Pawar said the Mahayuti government is giving priority to tribal development through education, healthcare, employment, women’s empowerment, skill development and infrastructure. She mentioned initiatives including modernisation of Ashram schools, e-learning facilities, scholarships for higher and overseas education, competitive examination guidance, hostels and skill-development programmes.

She further said the government is working to ensure forest rights for eligible beneficiaries, increase tribal incomes, promote small-scale industries and improve roads, electricity, water and healthcare facilities in remote areas.

Describing Vanrang as more than a cultural event, Pawar called it a celebration of tribal identity, traditions and emotions. The festival showcases tribal music, folk dances, handicrafts, traditional art and authentic cuisine.

She appealed to Mumbaikars to visit the festival, understand tribal traditions and values, and encourage their art and culture.

Several dignitaries, including Minister Narhari Zirwal, Cooperation Minister Babasaheb Patil and NCP leaders, attended the event.
