Retired Justice Sunil Shukre Takes Oath as Maharashtra Lokayukta

Mumbai, August 25: Retired Bombay High Court judge Justice Sunil Balakrishna Shukre on Tuesday took oath as the new Lokayukta of Maharashtra. Governor Jishnu Dev Varma administered the oath of office to Justice Shukre at a special ceremony held at Raj Bhavan.

Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde and Assembly Speaker Rahul Narwekar were among those present at the ceremony. Several ministers, senior administrative officials and senior police officers also attended the event.

After the swearing-in ceremony, the Chief Minister, Deputy Chief Minister and other dignitaries congratulated Justice Shukre by presenting him with bouquets and extended their best wishes for his tenure.

Justice Shukre is known for delivering several important and sensitive judgments during his long tenure at the Bombay High Court. He has also served as Chairman of the Maharashtra State Backward Class Commission. The commission’s report had helped facilitate the process for granting reservation to the Maratha community.

The Lokayukta is an important statutory institution responsible for strengthening transparency in administration and ensuring effective redressal of complaints related to corruption. On the occasion, confidence was expressed that the institution would receive fresh momentum and greater strength under Justice Shukre’s able leadership.
