Railways to Use Composite Sleepers, AI for Safety

In a significant move to enhance passenger safety and comfort, Indian Railways has announced the introduction of modern composite sleepers and advanced AI-based track monitoring systems. The decisions were taken during a high-level meeting chaired by the Railway Minister at the Ministry of Railways.

Composite Sleepers for Better Performance

As part of the upgrade, sleepers used in bridge approaches and at points and crossings will now be replaced with composite materials. These new sleepers offer several advantages over traditional iron and concrete ones. They are lighter, more durable, and capable of bearing higher loads. Additionally, they provide improved cushioning, making train journeys smoother—especially while passing over bridges and track junctions. Another key benefit is their adaptability. Composite sleepers can be designed according to specific site conditions, ensuring better performance and easier installation and maintenance.

Higher Strength and Lower Maintenance

The newly introduced sleepers can withstand loads of up to 700 kg per square centimetre, significantly improving durability. Their longer lifespan is expected to reduce maintenance costs for the railways over time.

AI-Based Track Monitoring

In a parallel development, Indian Railways will adopt Artificial Intelligence (AI) for real-time track monitoring. AI-enabled devices, including Ground Penetration Radar, will be installed in inspection vehicles to assess the condition of the track base more accurately and efficiently.

Advanced Welding Inspection

To further strengthen track safety, the Railways will implement Magnetic Particle Testing, a modern technique that helps detect even minor defects in welded joints.

These initiatives underline Indian Railways’ continued commitment to improving passenger safety, operational efficiency, and travel comfort. The adoption of modern materials and advanced technologies marks a major step forward in the modernization of the railway network.
