President Droupadi Murmu Presents ‘President of India’s Police Colour’ to Sikkim Police

President Says Police Must Become Partners and Guides for Citizens

President of India Smt Droupadi Murmu presented the prestigious ‘President of India’s Police Colour’ to the Sikkim Police at a ceremony held in Gangtok.

Congratulating the officers and personnel of the Sikkim Police, the President praised the force for its dedicated service since its establishment in 1897. She said the police force has played an important role in maintaining peace, security, and justice in the state.

Addressing the gathering, President Murmu said India’s policing system still carries the legacy of colonial rule, where the police were primarily used to control people rather than serve them. She stressed the need to completely move away from this colonial mindset to empower citizens and achieve the vision of a developed India, or “Viksit Bharat”.

The President highlighted the importance of transparency, accountability, and a citizen-friendly policing system. She said ordinary people should be able to register complaints without fear, and police personnel must adopt a sensitive approach towards women, children, and vulnerable sections of society.

She emphasised that the role of the police should evolve beyond merely catching criminals. According to her, the police must become partners and guides for citizens, helping to build trust between law enforcement agencies and the public. Such cooperation, she said, would strengthen the sense of security in society and deepen respect for the rule of law.

President Murmu also appreciated the contribution of the Sikkim Police in maintaining peace and harmony in the state. She noted that the force has earned the trust and affection of the people through its professional conduct and friendly approach towards citizens.
