Sara Ali Khan Birthday: From trolling to box-office disappointments, 7 challenges she has faced in Bollywood 

Sara Ali Khan is celebrating her 31st birthday today, August 12. Her career journey has been marked by hopes and success along with difficulties and the quest to prove one’s worth beyond one’s family background. Debuting with Kedarnath in 2018, she has worked on various genres including romantic dramas, period films, and web series but continues to confront doubts about her decision-making, her popularity, and if she has finally managed to step out of her family shadow. 

Let’s see seven challenges that Sara has faced throughout her career. 

1. The ‘star kid’ tag 

Although Sara entered Bollywood benefiting from her lineage, she is the daughter of Saif Ali Khan and Amrita Singh, it came with its own difficulties. She may have had it easier to get started in her career compared to other newcomers, but scrutiny of her actions was far more intense because of her family background. This constantly underlined imperative has made every success or failure part of a bigger debate about the nature of privilege in the film industry. 

2. Living up to the Kedarnath, Simmba start 

Sara started her commercial break in Bollywood with Kedarnath followed by Rohit Shetty’s Simmba, which became a box-office hit. The impressive start would inevitably raise anticipations. The next hurdle was to establish that her success was not merely owed to her on-screen pairing with the established actors and participating in commercial ventures.  

3. The controversy surrounding Love Aaj Kal 

Imtiaz Ali’s Love Aaj Kal was anticipated to be a huge leap for Sara. Sadly, the 2020 film got generally negative reviews, and her acting performance was heavily panned. The reports from the time showed audiences’ dissatisfaction with her talent, which some classified as overacting. The film served as an early reminder that having a successful debut does not mean that one’s career will go on without hiccups.  

4. The pressure of consecutive underwhelming releases 

Sara worked on movies like Coolie No. 1, Atrangi Re, and Gaslight which generally received less excitement from the public. While Atrangi Re attracted praise from some critics, Coolie No. 1 and Gaslight didn’t raise the adoration expected from a marketable lead actress. The OTT participation of Sara made it really tough to analyze her box-office resume. 

5. Taking on serious roles, and facing criticism for them 

Sara has made a firm effort to break out of the sweet and innocent city girl persona. In Ae Watan Mere Watan, she portrays the role of freedom fighter Usha Mehta, but the film was met with mixed reviews as well as criticism of her performance. For someone trying to garner respect for her profession, receiving such criticism is quite disheartening. 

6. The struggle to find a defining role 

Finding a role that will radically change her image thus her place among other actresses was not easy for Sara. While films such as Atrangi Re gave her a chance to experiment and show something new, Ae Watan Mere Watan and Gaslight pushed her into a role that she hasn’t played before. However, up to this point, she hasn’t been able to find the role that will bring her fame and recognition as an actress. 

7. Proving herself beyond the numbers 

Even Metro… In Dino, released in 2025, released in 2025, reflected the uncertainty of her journey. It opened at a modest level but displayed growth during the first weekend and collected Rs. 26 crore in the first week. In addition, the results of the film demonstrate clearly that one should not evaluate the work of Sara only by the results of the first day since she has been part of many projects involving ensemble casts. 

At 31, she probably faces the biggest challenge now that is related to the expectations of her name. She has tasted the joy of success, and she has also undergone trolling, intense criticism, and the uncertainty of Bollywood.
