Big Relief for Protesters as Maharashtra Extends Deadline to Withdraw Charges Filed in Political and Social Agitations

Cases Against Hundreds of Youth, Students, and Activists Set to Be Dropped; Extension Granted Until March 31, 2027

Mumbai, August 12: In a major relief for social and political activists across the state, the Maharashtra State Government has officially extended the deadline for withdrawing pending court cases related to public agitations. Under a revised government resolution (GR) issued by the Home Department on August 12, 2026, cases in which charge-sheets are filed up to March 31, 2027, will now be eligible for withdrawal.

Demonstrations, rallies, and blockades are routinely organized by political parties and social organizations to highlight public grievances. However, these agitations frequently lead to police registrations and subsequent court charge-sheets for alleged law violations. Previously, the government had sanctioned the withdrawal of cases where charge-sheets were filed up to July 31, 2026. As that deadline lapsed, and considering the cases registered against students and youth who participated in state-wide demonstrations supporting the ‘Jantar Mantar’ protests in Delhi, the state government decided to extend the timeline.

The Home Department clarified that all political and social agitation cases meeting the revised charge-sheet deadline of March 31, 2027, will be withdrawn in accordance with legal provisions and guidelines established in the primary government resolution dated September 20, 2022. All other terms and conditions specified in the original GR remain unchanged. This decision effectively removes legal uncertainties for hundreds of activists and has received widespread support across political and social circles in the state.
