October 2, 4 tickets and one final lie: Why Ajay Devgn’s Drishyam The Conclusion has to solve Bollywood’s biggest alibi 

October 2 is not just a date anymore. At least, not for fans of Drishyam. For many years, this date has been known for having the best alibis in Indian cinema. A journey. A stay at a hotel. Three movie tickets. A plate of pav bhaji. Satsang. All while somewhere crime was being committed. 

The same person has taught us another lesson about the fact that the most dangerous weapon can be a well-thought-out story and not a gun. 

Ajay Devgn has announced the third and final chapter of the Hindi franchise Drishyam, titled Drishyam The Conclusion, with Vijay Salgaonkar set to return to cinemas on October 2, 2026. The cast of The Conclusion includes Tabu, Shriya Saran, Rajat Kapoor and Prakash Raj. Yet, probably, the most surprising fact about this announcement is that Drishyam 3 will be released on the same day that has made Vijay Salgaonkar a pop-culture icon. 

When a date became an alibi 

Not every film franchise leaves behind a catchphrase. Fewer still manage to turn an entire itinerary into one. If you ask a Drishyam fan about October 2, chances are they will immediately think of Vijay’s efforts to memorize a narrative of what his family consumed for dinner and what they watched on television that night. 

The brilliance of Drishyam was that its focal point was not in a great car chases or dramatic trial confessions. What actually mattered was proof of innocence. 

What was Vijay’s weapon? Storytelling. That was what made his character so great. He was neither a police officer nor a gangster or any professional criminal. Vijay was a technical guy and a movie lover who realized one important truth: if a story is told well enough, people believe it. In that sense, Drishyam was always a film about the power of cinema itself. 

Vijay watched movies. He learned to be a movie director and when his family needed help he produced his own crime film, giving roles and building a timeline. The audience, of course, knew it was a lie. But Drishyam made us root for it anyway. 

The perfect crime was never really the point 

Here is where the film, Drishyam The Conclusion has a significant challenge. The initial two films created suspense around the question as to whether Vijay will keep escaping the law. But with the completion of two parts, the stakes need to increase significantly in part three beyond just finding a new piece of evidence or introducing yet another dedicated police officer who wants to solve the case. The Hindi movie series has already established that Vijay is always ahead of everyone else, so what happens when he runs out of tricks up his sleeve? Perhaps that is what makes this film interesting to watch. 

Essentially, every thriller has reached the time when the brightest character runs out of options. Besides, Vijay has been hiding behind more than just a good narrative. He’s used his family’s silence, the ability to see his enemy’s moves, and the audience’s belief in him. Consequently, the final part may be the best challenge for him: not how to create another story but rather how he can deal with the truth when it finally comes knocking at him. 

Can Bollywood’s smartest family man finally lose? 

This is the delicious moral dilemma at the heart of Drishyam. Vijay is not exactly innocent. A crime was committed. The evidence was sabotaged, and the investigating authorities were deceived. However, despite his transgressions, what makes Vijay so heroic in the eyes of the public is the fact that whatever he has done has been motivated by one thing only, keeping his family safe.  

Will audiences be cheering at the end, or will they be feeling betrayed when the story ends with Vijay getting caught? Either way, whichever choice Drishyam makes about the future of its hero, it has to make sure it satisfies the long-time viewers who have been waiting for Vijay’s lies to be exposed and also respects the audience that made him one of the most popular characters in the thriller genre.  

And this time, there is an additional factor that makes the burden of the ending even heavier. The original Drishyam series has already gone into its third installment which is surprising enough considering the impressive impact of how a rooted Indian story can develop multiple lives in different industries. The Hindi Drishyam films, meanwhile, have built a loyal audience of their own, with Drishyam 2 significantly expanding the franchise’s box-office footprint.  

Which means Drishyam The Conclusion isn’t merely arriving as another sequel. It is arriving with an ending to deliver.  

One last story, one last chance 

The choice of October 2 feels almost too perfect. What started as the day of Vijay Salgaonkar’s biggest falsehood marks now the day when the story reaches its end. Yet the announcement itself plays into this tradition making well-known aspects of the Drishyam story a springboard for the final part of the franchise.  

And, probably, this is the best way to think of Drishyam. For over ten years, Vijay Salgaonkar has been telling his story, to the authorities, to his family, to us. He has made us believe that a well-told story can triumph over evidence, investigation and even the truth. 

However, eventually any story comes to an end. What is left is the question: Has Vijay come clean, been caught, or has he done what he is the best at, performed one last trick? 

On October 2, 2026, audiences may finally find out. Because this time, Vijay Salgaonkar isn’t preparing an alibi. He’s preparing for the ending.
