Maharashtra Creates AI Dept to Power Digital Future

In a major push toward building a “Developed Maharashtra,” the state cabinet, has approved the creation of a dedicated Department of Electronics, Information Technology, and Artificial Intelligence.

The move is aimed at strengthening digital governance, enhancing administrative efficiency, and accelerating the adoption of emerging technologies across government systems.

As part of the decision, a new Information Technology cadre will be established, comprising permanent positions across the state secretariat, commissionerates, and district administrations. The existing IT functions under the General Administration Department will be carved out to form this independent department.

The government will also upgrade the current Directorate of Information Technology into a full-fledged Commissionerate for Electronics, Information Technology, and Artificial Intelligence. A total of 77 posts will be created for this commissionerate.

In addition, a dedicated IT cadre of 427 positions will be set up to manage technology-related operations across ministries, administrative departments, and district collector offices. To support project management and the monitoring of implemented initiatives, 389 technical positions will be filled through external agencies. For this purpose, a specialized body called the Maharashtra e-Mission Team (MEMT) will be established.

To build future talent, the government will also introduce an internship program for 200 engineering graduates, aimed at developing skilled manpower for the new department.

The initiative is expected to significantly expand the delivery of government services in online formats while improving efficiency through e-governance. It will also enable integrated and coordinated use of advancements in research, technology, and innovation to address developmental needs and administrative challenges.

With the formation of the new department, the state aims to promote data-driven decision-making, strengthen cybersecurity frameworks, and ensure the systematic adoption of emerging technologies. The move is also expected to support sectors such as sustainable agriculture, healthcare, renewable energy, and indigenous manufacturing by blending traditional knowledge with modern technological solutions.

The Cabinet has approved an estimated annual expenditure of ₹133.35 crore for the creation of these posts and the operationalization of the department.
