Akshaye Khanna: Bollywood’s Most Private Star

Akshaye Khanna is renowned for his unassuming contributions to Bollywood; his true quality lies in the level of respect with which almost all other actors are willing to give him. He is not universally recognized or known as one of the most in-demand actors; however, he maintains a great amount of respect in the industry.

In addition to his impressive body of work, Akshaye’s life story has many surprises, and there are numerous stories about him that even his most loyal fans may not have heard.

Here are some interesting things about Akshaye Khanna that most people wouldn’t know.

The star kid who carved his own identity

Being the son of Vinod Khanna was both an advantage and a disadvantage for Akshaye. He made his film debut in 1997 with Himalaya Putra; while he certainly played well in it, it was with his role in Border that he became famous and made his mark on the Bollywood map; he earned acclaim by being part of an impressive ensemble cast, and yet, he stood out with his impressive performance, a sign of the understated intensity that would define his career.

A crush he never hid

While some actors prefer to be diplomatic in their dealings with their co-stars, Akshaye has always chosen honesty as his preferred method of interaction. After working with Aishwarya Rai in Taal, he made it clear he had a huge crush on her; in fact, he revealed he was unable to take his eyes off her, a very uncharacteristic and refreshing statement from a normally very reserved actor.

The relationship that almost became a marriage

One of Bollywood’s most intriguing “what ifs” involves Karisma Kapoor. The speculation of a budding romance between the actress and Akshaye after her split from Ajay Devgan was making headlines. Both families were even involved, and at one point, there was serious talk of marriage. But issues of timing and career (more so from Karisma’s perspective) ultimately prevented this couple from ever actually tying the knot.

His most unexpected “crush confession”

Akshaye has definitely gone against the grain when it comes to his confession about his unexpected “celebrity crush.” In an interview from quite a while ago, he stated that had he been given the opportunity, he would have dated J. Jayalalithaa. Yes, a politician, and not just any, but one of India’s most powerful leaders. Some were quite surprised at the statement, as it reflects Akshaye’s uncommon persona.

The actor who chose solitude over spotlight

Akshaye Khanna never seemed to possess the drive to chase after fame like many of his peers. He has continuously been referred to as one of Bollywood’s most reclusive actors, keeping a low profile and avoiding excessive media attention or publicity whenever possible. He has also described himself as someone who cherishes his solitude and is “commitment-phobic.”

Maybe this is part of the reason he has chosen not to marry, even at 50. He has openly stated that relationships can be overwhelming and is very protective of his private space.

A talent that thrives quietly

Although he is not typically thought of as a superstar, Akshaye has established himself as one of the best actors of his generation with his work on films like Dil Chahta Hai, Humraaz, Hungama, Drishyam 2, and now Dhurandhar. Critically, people often refer to him as becoming the character rather than simply playing/performing it.

In an industry dominated by appearances, Akshaye Khanna remains an anomaly, a star who shines without trying too hard. He is not chasing the spotlight; he allows his work and his personality to do all of the talking.
