Mumbai, often called the city that never sleeps, is set to introduce a tranquil oasis in the form of its first elevated forest walkway. Developed by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) in the Malabar Hill region, this 705-meter-long walkway promises to be a perfect blend of nature and urban development. Inspired by Singapore’s renowned forest walkways, it will connect Kamala Nehru Park to Doongerwadi woods, offering Mumbaikars a peaceful escape amid greenery.
The eco-friendly walkway is constructed with a wooden structure designed to seamlessly merge with its surroundings. Special care has been taken to minimize disruption to the natural landscape, ensuring the smooth flow of water along the hill slopes and the unobstructed movement of wildlife. Visitors will enjoy uninterrupted views of the Arabian Sea, making this an iconic addition to the city’s attractions.
One of the standout features of the walkway is its dedicated birdwatching area, where guests can marvel at the rich diversity of avian life in the region. Additionally, a glass-bottom deck offers a unique perspective of the forest floor below, creating a memorable and immersive experience for visitors.
The entry and exit points for the walkway are located at Siri Road, just behind Kamala Nehru Park. The wooden deck blends harmoniously with the lush greenery, reflecting a thoughtful approach to urban planning and environmental preservation.
The project, with a budget of INR 25 crore, has faced several challenges but is now nearing completion. Approximately 90% of the civil work is finished, with tasks like electrification, painting, and the installation of restrooms and ticket counters currently underway. The BMC aims to open the walkway by the end of the year, in time for New Year celebrations.
This elevated forest walkway will offer Mumbaikars a much-needed respite from city life, combining nature with breathtaking sea views. It marks a significant step toward sustainable urban development, allowing people to reconnect with nature without leaving the city.
