The budget of the Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai (MCGM) for the financial year 2026–27 has been approved by the Standing Committee following detailed deliberations, despite opposition protests.
The budget, originally presented on February 25 by Municipal Commissioner Bhushan Gagrani, totals 809.53 billion (80,952.56 crore) with a surplus of 898.4 million (89.84 crore).
800 Crore Development Fund for Standing Committee
A key highlight of the budget is the allocation of approx.. INR 800 crore for the Development Fund to the Standing Committee, a figure that is significantly higher than the previous range of INR 600-650 crore.
Standing Committee Chairman Prabhakar Shinde stated that the authority to distribute these funds among political parties will rest with the committee leadership. The exact allocation details remain undisclosed and are expected to be announced shortly.
He added that the funds will be distributed across party lines, with provisions also made for the Mayor’s office.
Mayor likely to receive INR 100–150 Crore
According to sources, Ritu Tawde may receive between 1–1.5 billion (100–150 crore) from the development fund for civic projects. In previous years, mayors were allocated similar amounts under earlier administrations.
Funds for Corporators
All 227 newly elected corporators are expected to receive INR 60 lakh as corporator funds, and INR 1 crore as development funds. Priority will be given to corporators who have formally submitted proposals for development works.
Next steps in approval process
The Standing Committee-approved budget will be presented before the General Body of the corporation on April 9. Discussions among party leaders and corporators are scheduled to begin on April 15, with final approval expected by April 30.
Demand to cancel INR 4500 Cr. Waste Contract
Meanwhile, the Municipal Employees Workers Sena has demanded the cancellation of a proposed INR 4,500 crore tender related to waste collection and transportation, alleging financial irregularities.
The demand was formally submitted by Dr. Sanjay Kamble-Baperkar, Vice President of the organization, during a meeting with Mayor Ritu Tawde at the civic headquarters.
According to union representatives, the Mayor has assured that the proposal will be reviewed and appropriate action will be taken.
