India-Nordic ties deepen across key sectors

India and the Nordic countries have taken a major step towards strengthening their strategic partnership with a strong focus on green technology, innovation, defence cooperation, sustainable development, and economic growth. The latest summit discussions outlined an ambitious roadmap aimed at deepening collaboration across key sectors.

Blue Economy and Indo-Pacific Cooperation

A major highlight of the partnership is cooperation in the blue economy, which focuses on the sustainable use of ocean and marine resources. India and the Nordic nations agreed to work together on maritime connectivity, climate resilience, marine sustainability, and regional maritime security in the Indo-Pacific region. The initiative is expected to support long-term environmental protection while boosting trade and economic opportunities linked to ocean resources.

Boost to Research, Education and Talent Mobility

The summit also emphasized stronger collaboration in education, research, and innovation. Expanded academic partnerships will provide Indian students, researchers, and academics with greater exposure to global learning environments and advanced research ecosystems.

The partnership is expected to improve research quality, strengthen innovation-driven industries, encourage start-ups, and enhance skill development. Increased cooperation in STEM sectors is also likely to support future technological advancements and economic growth.

Defence Collaboration to Strengthen Manufacturing and Technology Transfer

India and the Nordic countries also explored deeper defence industrial cooperation. India’s policy allowing 100 percent Foreign Direct Investment in the defence industrial sector is expected to open new opportunities for technology transfer, joint innovation, advanced manufacturing, and research partnerships.

The collaboration is likely to boost domestic defence production, create employment opportunities, increase exports, and strengthen India’s defence preparedness and self-reliance in the sector.

India–Nordic Partnership Expands Beyond Trade

The relationship between India and the Nordic countries is steadily evolving into a broader Green Technology and Innovation Strategic Partnership. Both sides are now focusing on expanding cooperation in renewable energy, climate action, digital innovation, maritime affairs, trade, and sustainable development.

The India–EFTA Trade and Economic Partnership Agreement (TEPA) is expected to further strengthen economic ties between India and the Nordic region by improving investments, expanding market access, and promoting sustainable economic growth.

Alongside economic and strategic cooperation, cultural engagement and people-to-people connections continue to play a significant role in deepening India–Nordic relations.
