India Hosts 8th BRICS Heads of Prosecution Services Meeting Under BRICS 2026 Chairship

New Delhi, July 20: The Department of Legal Affairs under the Ministry of Law and Justice is hosting the 8th BRICS Heads of Prosecution Services Meeting virtually from July 20–21, 2026, as part of India’s BRICS 2026 Chairship. The meeting is being chaired by Attorney General for India, Shri R. Venkataramani, and brings together the heads of prosecution services from BRICS member nations.

The meeting aligns with India’s BRICS theme, “Building for Resilience, Innovation, Cooperation and Sustainability,” and aims to strengthen collaboration among member countries in the field of criminal justice and prosecution.

This year’s discussions are centered on the theme, “Exchanging Experiences and Best Practices in Criminal Adjudication from the Prosecution’s Perspective.” Delegates will deliberate on improving prosecution systems by sharing institutional experiences, enhancing transparency, and adopting modern legal practices.

A key focus of the meeting is the integration of digital technologies, including Artificial Intelligence, into criminal justice systems. Participants will discuss the digitisation of criminal procedures, effective handling of electronic evidence, and the implementation of time-bound trials to improve judicial efficiency.

The forum will also address emerging global challenges such as cybercrime, transnational financial offences, and environmental crimes, emphasizing the need for stronger international cooperation. Discussions will explore ways to enhance mutual legal assistance, facilitate cross-border evidence sharing, and strengthen the professional capabilities of prosecutors across BRICS nations.

The Department of Legal Affairs highlighted that the virtual platform reflects India’s commitment to building stronger institutional partnerships and promoting technology-driven legal cooperation. The meeting is expected to further reinforce collaboration among BRICS countries while supporting the development of a more transparent, efficient, and victim-centric criminal justice system.
