Bollywood bets big on fresh on-screen pairs

The excitement of seeing a new onscreen romantic duo is totally fresh, with no nostalgia, no already-seen chemistry, and no “I’ve watched this a million times” fatigue. Will they sizzle? Will they surprise us? Or will we spend the entire film wondering why two incredibly good-looking people still feel like strangers in the same frame?

As Bollywood and South Indian films release some really wild, new jodis in their films over the coming year, audiences are enthusiastically choosing their favorites, debating jodi compatibility, and analysing every teaser picture like we are professionals all in and out. From epic mythological films to intense romantic films, these upcoming jodis have all of the results and high expectations/pressure. Basically, we are all ready to watch and judge.

Ranbir Kapoor and Sai Pallavi (Ramayana: Part 1)

The new pairing of Ranbir Kapoor and Sai Pallavi in Nitesh Tiwari’s upcoming film Ramayana: Part 1 is one of the most anticipated match-ups of 2026. Ranbir Kapoor as Lord Ram and Sai Pallavi as Sita is a combination that feels both unconventional and strangely perfect at the same time.

Ranbir has this melancholic vibe about him, which is definitely cohesive with a big hero persona. Sai Pallavi’s authenticity and connection with viewers through storytelling are unparalleled. She has never relied on glamour to command attention; her appearance in a film of this scale will seem completely plausible as far as credibility is concerned.

But if the film gets the emotional core right, this might genuinely become one of the defining screen pairings of the decade. No pressure.

Lakshya Lalwani and Ananya Panday (Chand Mera Dil)

This pairing feels like a classic risk of betting on a traditional Indian film romance. Lakshya Lalwani has appeared in Kill and impressed viewers with his intense performance. Now, he is stepping into softer, romantic territory opposite Ananya Panday in Chand Mera Dil, and the chatter about their chemistry is all over the internet.

They are, however, both relatively new to their respective roles, and they have some visual compatibility in the “dreamy modern-romance” visual style that is very popular in Bollywood. Ananya has become more and more comfortable playing parts in lighter urban romances, while Lakshya has demonstrated a great deal of believable sincerity and emotional weight in his acting.

The real challenge for this pairing will be creating an emotional connection with the audience. Romantic dramas only work when audiences buy into the longing; the audience will have to believe that this pairing can bring more than just aesthetically pleasing images on Instagram to gain that connection. But there’s curiosity here, and that’s half the battle won.

Kartik Aaryan and Sreeleela (Tu Meri Zindagi Hai)

Kartik Aaryan is stepping into a territory of tortured, loverboy musical-type role in Tu Meri Zindagi Hai alongside Sreeleela, which appears to have been a very deliberate move to set the stage for the next great Bollywood romantic couple. Directed by Anurag Basu, Tu Meri Zindagi Hai is said to be a musical story about a self-destructive rockstar and the dramatic romance between them through their relationship with music.

And honestly? This pairing has chaotic-romantic energy written all over it. Kartik thrives in situations that put him in vulnerable positions, rather than his usually overly verbal charm, and Sreeleela has a lot of energy, spontaneity, and a very strong screen presence that Hindi audiences are just now becoming familiar with.

They have also not appeared together enough that we can predict their dynamic, so it makes for an interesting reason to see what kind of chemistry the two have together, and if Basu can capture the film’s signature aching romance, this duo could become unexpectedly addictive onscreen or gloriously messy. Either way, we’ll be seated.

Ram Charan and Janhvi Kapoor (Peddi)

After RRR, every project of Ram Charan has a lot of expectations, and the film “Peddi” will be no different from it. The film will be directed by Buchi Babu Sana with Janhvi Kapoor co-starring alongside Ram Charan.

This pairing seems to be particularly fascinating due to their different styles of acting. Ram Charan generally has a strong, earthy presence, along with having mass appeal. On the other hand, Janhvi does her best in emotional scenes, which places them at the opposite ends of the spectrum as far as screen presence is concerned. The challenge will be whether the film finds chemistry between those two tones instead of letting them feel like they belong in entirely different movies.

Visually speaking, they already look striking together. Additionally, if Peddi balances romance with the larger-than-life sports-drama atmosphere, then this could end up being one of the more interesting and successful cross-industry pairings in recent memory.

Sharvari Wagh and Vedang Raina (Untitled Imtiaz Ali Film / Main Vaapas Aaunga)

Imtiaz Ali has a reputation for introducing new actors together as a romantic couple in his films, and it has almost reached the point of being considered a tradition of sorts. His upcoming movie, reportedly titled Main Vaapas Aaunga, will star Sharvari Wagh and Vedang Raina, and early glimpses from the film have already triggered conversations around their easygoing chemistry.

This couple may have one of the “cool indie romance” types of energy. Sharvari has an ability that is rare among today’s younger actors, to be contemporary and yet not seem fake at all, while Vedang brings an understated appeal that does not scream for attention. Together, they appear to be the kind of couple out of which Imtiaz likes to develop his storylines – emotionally messy, slightly lost, deeply attractive people wandering through heartbreak and self-discovery.

There is always a danger of style overtaking substance, and an increasing number of the current audiences of romantic drama are calling out filmmakers on this issue. However, provided the screenplay is solid, this couple has the chance to establish themselves as a quiet favourite among all these big upcoming jodis.
