Bhumi Pednekar’s viral controversy explained: What she said, why the internet is angry, and the backlash that won’t die down 

Bollywood actress Bhumi Pednekar is in the middle of a massive controversy! Following her comments on the recent protests led by the CJP, the actress found herself amid some serious criticism on social media. What started as a plea for civility during the protests quickly turned into accusations of privilege, selective outrage, and insensitivity. The whole matter was made more complicated after Bhumi’s former acting teacher spoke openly about her remarks.

The Bollywood actor uploaded a video in which she analyzed the slogans used during student protests against Prime Minister Narendra Modi. She pointed out that while people have the right to protest in a democratic country, she feels unhappy about using swearing language toward PM.  

In the video, she said that disagreement is normal in a democracy, but abusing country’s elected leader is not a part of Indian culture. She explained that even if a person disagrees with their family, it doesn’t mean they can use swearing addresses. 

Why did people react so strongly? 

Many people on social media challenged Bhumi’s selective choice of issues which she avoided to mention. Many internet users reminded that the protests started because of the NEET 2026 paper leakage case. As it was reported by many students, they suffered from serious police oppression during the protests. Those who criticized Bhumi pointed out to the fact that her video concentrated exclusively on how the Prime Minister is being described in the public, while she ignored all the facts concerning lathi-charge or injuries of the protesters.  

Many users of social media stated that Bhumi demonstrated “selective empathy” by condemning offensive words but not mentioning what led to the protests in general. A lot of people labeled her “privileged” or “out of touch” for the fact that it is much easier to give a lesson on politeness to others rather than help them solve their problems. 

The backlash snowballed online 

The brief clips shared from Bhumi’s video went viral and the hashtags denouncing the actress began trending. Many people said that while celebrities are ready to speak about good manners only when it comes to criticizing the politicians, they are indifferent to the wrongdoings committed against the ordinary citizens. 

Not everyone understood why Bhumi, who has always been open about many social issues, failed to mention the police actions while making the statement about appropriate protests. 

The criticism also reached Instagram, where the netizens have been actively commenting on her post and discussing whether celebrities should be selective when speaking about politics. 

Bhumi’s second video and fresh criticism 

Along with a lot of complaints, Bhumi posted another video, condemning the fact that a girl participating in protests has been receiving rape and death threats. In her video, she claimed that no one deserves cyberbullying and called everyone for showing empathy and engaging in respectful discussions. 

Nevertheless, instead of calming down the scandal, Bhumi sparked the new wave of criticism. 

Some people appreciated Bhumi’s condemnation of cyberbullying, but others considered it ‘damage control’, arguing that it came only after she faced intense criticism for her earlier remarks. 

Bhumi Pednekar’s former acting teacher joins the debate 

The controversy took another unexpected turn when Bhumi’s former acting coach publicly criticised her comments. 

Questioning her analogy about respecting elders and teachers, she wrote, “@bhumisatishpednekkar I remember, I was, briefly, one of your teachers at a Mumbai-based film school. Unfortunately for me, I also remember how disrespectful, almost disdainful, you were about your teachers. Care to explain your new approach towards the concepts of respect and responsibility and how your world-view changed so drastically in the interim?” 

Now these remarks quickly went viral, with many social media users citing them as another example of the growing criticism surrounding the actor’s statements. 

A debate bigger than Bhumi 

The controversy has now gone beyond Bhumi Pednekar. It has led to a larger discussion about the role of celebrities when it comes to sensitive political situations.
