The trailer of Alliance has finally arrived, and if first impressions are anything to go by, Prime Video may have found a reality format that feels very different from the usual drama-heavy captive reality shows. Actor Kunal Kemmu, for the first time in his career, will host a show. It is based on one simple theme that offers a dramatically different experience from other similar formats, the premise being simple: don’t trust anyone for very long!
The trailer does not waste any time in establishing what the focus of the show will be. 16 people are entered into the competition as allies, but, as Kunal Kemmu states in the trailer, alliances can change quickly and lies could hold more importance than loyalty. The emphasis in the trailer is on the use of many different character-based activities, such as high-pressure challenges, individual strategy sessions, secret conversations, and moments when it appears that alliances will be under constant pressure. More emphasis is given to the tactic of gameplay and psychological “tactics” as opposed to simply highlighting physical altercations and moments of controversy.
Beyond the unique format of the series, the cast of contestants participating in the competitions may be one of the most intriguing elements. Among the many familiar faces to be seen in the teaser trailer are Ravi Kishan and his daughter Riva, Kushal Tandon, Arsalan Goni, Daisy Shah, Zaid Darbar, Niti Taylor, Mini Mathur, Nikhil Chinappa, and a number of the most popular digital content creators today. The combination of actors, actresses, TV stars, personalities, and influencers, provides participants with a wide variety of competition.
The Alliance series appears very well-made visually and has good scale for production, including elaborate arenas for challenges, great lighting, and beautiful editing; this all translates into a premium-quality television show. The trailer maintains a fast pace throughout in order to ensure there is always something happening at all times. Throughout the trailer, there are continual quick glimpses of shifting alliances, game strategy and tension-related confrontations.
Kunal Kemmu seems to be a great host for the show by being more of a passive observer and guide as opposed to dominating the screen; this allows the contestants and the rules of the game to be the focus. His demeanor is one of serenity in an otherwise chaotic environment.
It will be interesting to see if Alliance can rise above the significant competition in the reality show genre, but as far as creating curiosity around the launch of a new series, the trailer is successful. As alliances, deception, and continuously-changing relationships are at the core of the show, the gameplay should no longer rely on physical attributes such as size and strength but rather by knowing who is trustworthy, when to betray them, and how to survive the game.
