From Swadeshi Roots to a Future-Ready Workforce: How Central Bank of India Is Reimagining Its People Legacy

Every employee who joins Central Bank of India becomes part of a story that began in 1911. However, we never expect our people to be inspired simply because of our history. Our responsibility is to make that legacy meaningful in today’s context. For us, the spirit of Swadeshi is not confined to our past, it is reflected in how we develop our people, embrace change and prepare our workforce for the future.
Established as India’s first commercial bank wholly owned and managed by Indians, Central Bank of India was founded on the ideals of self-reliance, trust and nation-building. More than a century later, those values continue to guide our people philosophy. While banking has transformed dramatically through digitalisation, artificial intelligence and changing customer expectations, our purpose remains unchanged, i.e. to create an institution where employees grow with integrity, competence and a deep sense of service to the nation.
Today’s professionals seek much more than a stable career. They seek meaningful work, continuous learning, opportunities for growth and an organisation that values them as individuals. Recognising this shift, we have consciously evolved our human resource practices while preserving the values that have defined the Bank for over a century.
One of the most significant transformations has been the digitisation of our employee ecosystem. Through our integrated Human Resource Management System (HRMS), employees can seamlessly access a wide range of HR services, from recruitment and digital onboarding with secure multi-stage verification, leave management and reimbursements to transfer requests, training nominations and employee services. By simplifying routine administrative processes, HRMS has reduced turnaround time, enhanced transparency and allowed employees to devote greater attention to customer service and business development.
At the same time, our talent acquisition strategy has evolved to meet the changing needs of the banking industry. Alongside regular recruitment, we have strengthened specialist hiring in areas such as Information Technology, Digital Banking, Risk Management, Treasury, Marketing and Data Analytics. As banking becomes increasingly technology-driven, building specialised capabilities has become essential for sustaining business growth and delivering superior customer experiences.
Learning remains one of the strongest pillars of our people strategy. We continuously invest in structured induction programmes, leadership development initiatives, functional and behavioural training, digital learning platforms and specialised capability-building interventions. Our objective is not merely to create competent bankers but to nurture agile professionals who are prepared to lead in an increasingly dynamic financial ecosystem.
An important aspect of making our legacy relevant is ensuring that every employee feels included and empowered to grow. It is a matter of pride that Central Bank of India was among the earliest institutions in the country to recruit women employees, way back in 1926, when such opportunities were still uncommon. That progressive outlook continues to shape our policies even today.
We have established All-Women Staff Branches across all our 91 Regional Offices, creating greater visibility for women professionals while encouraging leadership at the grassroots level. Women’s Leadership Development Programmes, childcare allowance, maternity support programmes with professional counselling for employees and their families, flexible transfer provisions for women employees with young children, sabbatical opportunities for higher education and family responsibilities, and transparent promotion processes together create an ecosystem where women can build long-term careers with confidence.
Employee well-being has also become an integral part of our organisational culture. Through Cent Chetna, our Employee Assistance Programme, employees and their families have access to confidential professional counselling and holistic wellness support. We believe that supporting mental and emotional well-being is no longer optional, it is essential for building a resilient and high-performing workforce.
Beyond policies and technology, we continuously remind our employees that they are contributing to something much larger than themselves. Every branch, whether located in a metropolitan city or in the remotest part of the country, contributes to financial inclusion, economic empowerment and India’s growth story. Helping employees understand this larger purpose creates a stronger emotional connection with the organisation than any policy ever could.
As a public sector bank, we have the privilege of serving millions of Indians across diverse geographies and communities. That responsibility demands a workforce that combines professional excellence with empathy, adaptability and integrity. Our role as HR leaders is therefore not only to recruit talent but also to nurture a culture where people are trusted, respected and inspired to perform at their best.
For us, the legacy of 1911 is not a chapter preserved in history, it is a living philosophy. Every initiative we undertake, every employee we develop and every leader we nurture reflects the same belief with which the Bank was founded over a century ago: that institutions endure when they invest in people, embrace change with confidence and remain committed to serving the nation with purpose. History gives us our identity, but it is our people who will define the next chapter of Central Bank of India’s journey.
