The situation has worsened for Samay Raina, despite having the Supreme Court rule heavily against him for not complying with the court’s orders regarding the controversial remarks he made in relation to India’s Got Latent. The Supreme Court has observed strongly that Raina has “taken the court for a ride” and “openly disobeyed” the court’s orders. A fine of 3 lakh rupees was imposed on him.
The case had arisen out of a plea regarding the inappropriate comments about those suffering from disabilities and rare genetic conditions during the show India’s Got Latent. The Supreme Court had ordered Raina and others involved in the show to issue a public apology without conditions and take steps to raise awareness regarding persons with disabilities.
The Supreme Court has shown displeasure that the directions of the court have not been fully obeyed. The judges commented that it was surprising to hear claims of filing of affidavits since the statements made in court were not being upheld.
Aside from Raina, influencer Ranveer Allahbadia and comedian Ashish Chanchlani have also been reprimanded for ignoring valid points made by the court. Both of them have been fined Rs 3 lakh each, and they are required to pay the fine within a time span of two weeks.
The issue stems from 2025 when the remarks made in India’s Got Latent ignited a massive outcry and prompted a legal follow-up. Following this, Samay Raina cancelled all the episodes of the show from YouTube as well as stated his willingness to cooperate with the investigation. The case reached the Supreme Court, where it stated that jokes should not undermine the status of people with disabilities.
With this latest statement, it is clear that the court has clarified that all its orders will have to be complied with, irrespective of the person concerned.
