BMC Plans Dadar ‘Model Parking’ Project

Mumbai, June 10, 2026: In a bid to improve parking management and ease traffic congestion, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has launched a special initiative to transform the public parking facility on Jagannath Sawant Road in Dadar (West) into a ‘Model Parking’ facility. If the pilot project receives a positive response from citizens, similar measures will be implemented at public parking lots across Mumbai.

The initiative aims to encourage greater use of designated parking spaces while ensuring safer and more organized parking facilities. As part of the project, the parking lot has undergone a cleanliness drive, additional lighting has been installed, and CCTV cameras have been set up to enhance security. Special measures have also been introduced to provide a safer environment for women drivers.

To encourage local residents to use the facility, BMC is offering a 50 percent discount on monthly parking passes. In the first phase, 400 discounted passes will be made available, with further expansion to be considered based on demand.

The civic body is also strengthening enforcement in surrounding areas. Roads in designated “No Parking” zones are being marked with red-and-black curb markings for better visibility, while red-and-white markings are being introduced to indicate parking arrangements based on odd and even dates. Additional directional signboards have also been installed to help motorists locate the parking facility more easily.

Mumbai’s growing vehicle population has increased the need for efficient parking management. BMC currently operates 37 public parking facilities across the city, providing space for approximately 30,135 vehicles.

The Model Parking initiative is being implemented under the guidance of Ashwini Bhide Municipal Commissioner of Mumbai.

Additional Municipal Commissioner (Projects) Abhijit Bangar said the Jagannath Sawant Road facility can accommodate around 1,000 three- and four-wheelers, along with 12 two-wheelers. The surrounding areas, including Kotwal Garden, Kabutarkhana, Ganesh Peth Lane, and the stretch between T.R. Sawant Marg and Bal Govinddas Marg, have long been designated as “No Parking” zones.

More than 200 No Parking signboards have already been installed in the area, and additional signage is being added. The civic administration is also considering introducing a valet parking service at the facility in the future.

BMC has announced that from July 1, 2026, vehicles found parked in No Parking zones around Jagannath Sawant Road and nearby areas will face strict enforcement and penalties through the traffic police.

Officials believe that if local residents actively support and use the Model Parking facility, the initiative could serve as a blueprint for similar projects across Mumbai, helping improve parking discipline and reduce traffic congestion in the city.
