Inmates to Get Clean, Chilled Drinking Water
In a significant move aimed at improving inmate welfare, the Maharashtra government has decided to provide clean and chilled drinking water in prisons across the state. The decision comes in response to directions issued by the Bombay High Court.
According to a government resolution issued by the Home Department on April 6, 2026, administrative approval has been granted for the procurement of “water coolers with purifiers” under a scheme focused on enhancing medical and basic facilities in prisons.
Court intervention prompted action
The decision follows a petition filed before the Bombay High Court, which raised serious concerns about the quality of drinking water being provided to inmates. The court noted that water stored in containers containing dust and sediments was being used not only for routine purposes but also for drinking.
Taking note of the situation, the court directed authorities to ensure the provision of separate, clean drinking water for prisoners. Acting on these directions, the state government has now approved the installation of modern water purification systems in correctional facilities.
481 units to be installed across the state
Under the approved plan, a total of 481 water cooler and purifier units will be installed in prisons across Maharashtra. Each unit is estimated to cost approximately ₹2.10 lakh and will include essential components such as storage tanks, pumps, electrical fittings, and plumbing infrastructure.
The procurement process will be carried out through standard government mechanisms, and the expenditure will be covered under the 2026–27 financial allocation.
Focus on Health and basic rights
Access to safe drinking water is considered a fundamental requirement for inmate health and hygiene. Several prisons had previously reported concerns regarding water quality, making this intervention particularly significant.
Officials believe that the introduction of purified and chilled drinking water will help improve living conditions in prisons and contribute positively to inmates’ health.
Step toward humane prison administration
The move is being seen as an important step toward strengthening basic human rights within the prison system. By ensuring access to clean drinking water, the government aims to address long-standing concerns and bring prison facilities in line with acceptable standards of care.
