The Indian stock exchanges, the National Stock Exchange (NSE) and the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE), are preparing for the annual Muhurat Trading session, a symbolic and auspicious event held to mark the festival of lights. This special, one-hour trading window is timed to coincide with Diwali and the commencement of the Hindu New Year, “Vikram Samvat 2082,” making it a memorable start for traders and investors.
This year, the festive buying begins with Dhanteras on October 18, leading into a weekend. While markets will be closed on Tuesday, October 21, for the main Diwali celebration, the Muhurat Trading session will be conducted on the same day.
Breaking from the traditional evening schedule of past years, the 2025 Muhurat Trading will take place during the afternoon. The Pre-Open Session is scheduled from 1:30 PM to 1:45 PM IST, followed by the Main Trading Session from 1:45 PM to 2:45 PM IST. The market will officially close for the day at 3:05 PM. Following the Diwali closure and the Muhurat session, markets will remain closed on Wednesday for Balipratipada.
Muhurat Trading is considered a highly auspicious event, symbolizing new beginnings, prosperity, and a fresh start for financial commitments. For many, placing token trades during this hour is a deeply ingrained custom, viewed as inviting wealth and success for the year ahead. This symbolic moment unites tradition with modern financial markets.
