Noel Tata’s daughters, Maya and Leah, have been appointed to the board of trustees of the Sir Ratan Tata Industrial Institute (SRTII), a key institution under the Sir Ratan Tata Trust. Their induction has stirred internal unrest within the organization, particularly among the outgoing trustees, Arnaz Kotwal and Freddy Talati, who were replaced by the Tata sisters. Kotwal voiced her discontent in a letter, claiming she was left in the dark about the decision and highlighting the lack of direct communication.
This development signals a growing presence of the next generation of the Tata family in the group’s affairs. The Sir Ratan Tata Trust, which plays a pivotal role in Tata Sons, has brought Maya and Leah onboard as part of its efforts to oversee ongoing renovation and expansion at SRTII. With this move, all three of Noel Tata’s children now have roles on the boards of smaller Tata Trusts, though they have not yet been inducted into the larger Sir Ratan Tata Trust and Allied Trusts or Sir Dorabji Tata Trust and Allied Trusts.
Maya Tata, who began her career at Tata Capital, currently leads the Tata Neu app at Tata Digital. Leah Tata, a Vice President at Indian Hotels, boasts a background in marketing and holds a master’s degree from IE Business School. Their appointments are seen as a strategic move to prepare them for future leadership roles within the Tata Group, positioning them as millennial leaders for the evolving landscape of the organization.
The board’s approval of these appointments was unanimous, with prominent figures such as Noel Tata and Venu Srinivasan backing the decision. Who are Noel Tata’s Daughters?
Leah Tata is the eldest daughter of Noel and Aloo Tata, serving as Vice President at The Indian Hotels Company Limited (IHCL), the hospitality arm of Tata Group. She has been with the company since 2006, after completing her master’s in marketing from IE Business School.
Maya Tata has worked in Tata Digital and Tata Opportunities Fund and played an essential role in launching the Tata Neu app. She also serves on the board of Tata Medical Center Trust, managing the Tata Medical Center in Kolkata, focused on healthcare.
