After the sweltering summer, it’s safe to say we’ve all been eagerly awaiting the refreshing monsoon showers. Now that the monsoon season is officially here, it’s time to embrace the lush greenery and gorgeous vistas of Maharashtra’s western ghats.
For trekking enthusiasts, the Western Ghats offer a treasure trove of breathtaking trails. Whether you’re navigating dense jungles, verdant grasslands, or trekking to magnificent waterfalls, there’s something for everyone. Here are five stunning treks to embark on this monsoon.
Visapur Fort Trek
Visapur Fort is renowned for its enchanting waterfall trail and the panoramic views from the plateau at the top. The trek starts from a mud trail out of Bhaje village and ascends gradually through a forested area. This easy monsoon trek, located near the Mumbai-Pune express highway, is perfect for beginners. As you ascend, you’ll encounter water cascading down the stones, adding to the trek’s charm.
Andharban Trek
For those who love jungle treks, Andharban offers a deep forest experience filled with beautiful views, gushing waterfalls, and the melodious chirping of birds. The trek provides a breathtaking view of the Kundalika Valley, with numerous streams and waterfalls along the way. The Tamhini Ghat’s enchanting flora and fauna, including birds like the Dwarf Kingfisher, Malabar Whistling Thrush, and Jacobin Cuckoo, add to the allure. The best time to visit is between June and September, with post-monsoon night treks also available.
KP Falls
If you’ve traveled by train from Lonavla to Karjat, you might have glimpsed the magnificent KP Falls cascading over a cave/tunnel. This waterfall flows over a man-made tunnel carved into a rock wall. Though visible from the ground near Zenith Waterfall in Khopoli, it remains relatively unknown. The unique sight of a train crossing the bridge and disappearing into tunnels on both sides makes this a memorable visit. You can reach Khopoli Waterfall by walking along the railway track from either Karjat or Lonavla.
Devkund Waterfall
Devkund is a hidden gem located deep within the forests surrounding the Bhira Dam. The waterfall, believed to drop from a height of over 80 feet into a pond about 30 meters in diameter, is truly mesmerizing. The easy trek through dense forest brings you to the base of the Devkund Waterfall, where you can also opt to camp along the Bhira reservoir’s waters, making for a serene and picturesque adventure.
Harishchandragad Trek
For those seeking a challenge, the Harishchandragad Trek is one of the most demanding in the Western Ghats. This ancient hill fort in the Ahmednagar district, located in the Malshej Ghat, reaches an altitude of 4,670 feet. The trek offers various adventures and attractions, including temples, a Pushkarni, and caves on top, all representing different cultures from the 6th century onwards. Harishchandragad’s rich history and stunning landscapes make it a favorite among seasoned trekkers.
