BMC Steps Up Juhu Beach Cleanup Amid Heavy Rains

Mumbai, July 15: The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has intensified its cleanup drive at Juhu Beach following heavy rainfall and high tides that have washed large volumes of floating waste back onto the shoreline. The Solid Waste Management Department is removing around 180 metric tonnes of waste every day, with nearly 1,800 metric tonnes cleared over the past 10 days through scientific disposal methods.

The intensified operation has been undertaken under the special attention of local MLA Ameet Satam, while Deputy Municipal Commissioner (Solid Waste Management) Kiran Dighavkar has deployed additional manpower and machinery to speed up the cleanup.

Juhu Beach, stretching nearly 7 kilometres, is currently receiving approximately 350 metric tonnes of debris daily due to tidal waves carrying back waste that had earlier flowed into the Arabian Sea through drains and natural waterways during the recent spell of over 1,000 mm of rainfall recorded in early July.

To tackle the increased waste load, the BMC has strengthened its regular deployment. In addition to the existing 2 beach cleaning machines, 2 bobcats, 10 dumpers, 1 JCB, and 150 sanitation workers, the civic body has deployed 1 additional beach cleaning machine, 2 bobcats, 5 dumpers, 1 JCB, 2 tractor trolleys, 2 poclain machines, and 90 extra sanitation workers working in two shifts.

The civic body said the cleanup operation is being carried out continuously using both mechanised equipment and manual labour, with collected waste being transported immediately for scientific processing and disposal.

BMC has appealed to citizens and visitors to cooperate by avoiding littering on beaches and public places and ensuring proper waste disposal, especially during the monsoon, to prevent garbage from entering drains and waterways. The civic body emphasised that public participation is crucial for protecting Mumbai’s coastline and marine environment.
