As worries about activist and education reformist Sonam Wangchuk’s health continues to rise following his hunger strike, actor Vivek Oberoi seems to be refraining from speaking about it. When asked about Wangchuk’s protest, Oberoi said he would steer clear of politics as he is an actor and not a politician.
At a public function recently, Vivek was posed with questions regarding Wangchuk’s ongoing hunger strike which entered the 20th day today. In response to those questions, Vivek provided no comments on the issue while emphasizing the importance of voices from the public in a democratic set-up.
“Main abhineta hoon, neta nahi hoon. Main political cheezon par dhyaan nahi deta. Hum observe karte hain, seekhte hain. Zindagi mein bahut kuch dekhne aur seekhne ko mil raha hai,” Vivek said, adding that he prefers to observe and learn rather than comment on political issues.
When further questioned on the protest led by Wangchuk, the actor maintained an unbiased viewpoint and did not take any sides. “A healthy democracy gives every voice its place. If people have expressed their views, that itself is a sign of a healthy democracy,” he said, refraining from either supporting or criticising the protest.
With that happening, the hunger strike being carried out by Sonam Wangchuk continues to be at Jantar Mantar in Delhi as he joined the protest that commenced from June 28 by the Cockroach Janata Party.
The protest that started with the issue of alleged discrepancies in NEET examination went on to become the bigger cause of calling for reformations in educational processes involving accountability. Wangchuk’s worsening health remains a matter of concern. It has been reported by doctors looking after him that he has lost a total of around nine kilograms from the time he has begun fasting and is suffering from weakness.
In spite of political and social big names requesting him to end his fast, Wangchuk continues to protest and questions the lack of talks initiated by the government instead of pressuring him to finish the fast.
