Cocktail 2 Trailer Promises a Fun Modern Romance

Cocktail is one of Bollywood’s best-loved romance dramas, and now after nearly a decade, there is a sequel, Cocktail 2. The problem facing a sequel that very few sequels can succeed in overcoming will be the nostalgia factor. What made the first Cocktail so good was it had style, was emotional and was brutally honest about love, friendship and broken hearts. And although the new trailer of Cocktail 2 knows what it is up against in terms of competition for past memories of the original film, rather than attempting to recreate that magical shot-for-shot as many sequels do, the filmmakers are looking to create their own identity.

In fact, from the trailer, Cocktail 2 appears to contain all the right elements for an enjoyable summer movie: the director Homi Adajania has assembled Shahid Kapoor, Kriti Sanon and Rashmika Mandanna in an unusually complicated triangular relationship involving desire, friendship and emotional turmoil (though the trailer won’t tell us what elements of the plot are present). But what we know is that this film will also involve a complex storyline focused on relationships that won’t be able to remain uncomplicated.

One of the major strengths of the film trailer is definitely its energy. All aspects of every frame are alive and colorful. The trailer provides a glossy, global presentation of the film with beautiful visuals; and gives viewers a feel for the aspirational lifestyle the film depicts through both exotic locations (beach parties, etc.) and emotional/intimate scenes. The film’s locations and visuals are, actually making sense. While the storyline is similar to many others you have seen before; the trailer does well at making sure that I am engaged due to the way the film is created.

Shahid Kapoor fits perfectly into the world that this movie takes place in. This actor brings a natural charm to the role and seems to have found the ideal balance of humour, romance and emotional struggle in this role. His first monologue demonstrates the nature of these relationships and introduces us to the man who will be both cynical and vulnerable to us. He was fortunate enough to have had many emotionally conflicted role experiences and the trailer indicates that he may again be playing an emotionally conflicted character.

Kriti Sanon shines brighter than everyone else there and stands out from the pack as a show stopper when it comes to acting. From beginning to end of the trailer, she shows a confidence and spontaneity to her acting that almost immediately makes you take notice. Whether she’s delivering her fun and playful one-liners or dominating the screen with her glamorous presence, she possesses the same freeriding personality that made Veronica such a memorable character in the original movie.

Rashmika Mandanna brings the warmth and emotional stability required of the events happening in the movie. Although she is provided with fewer opportunities than Kriti to stand out in the trailer, she balances out the rest of the movie that is filled with chaos. The chemistry between her, Shahid and Kriti definitely adds to the intrigue of the movie, and I would be willing to bet that wherever the emotional core is of the overall storyline, it will likely revolve around Rashmika’s character.

The trailer’s ability to be heavily emotional also favours Cocktail 2 since modern day bollywood has made a name for themselves by being safe/wholesome in their representations of romance, however Cocktail 2 focuses more on people with flaws that are making complicated discisions about their lives/loves and many of the elements that made up the first movie are still there(for example love triangles, ever changing loyalties, and overall emotional confusion).

The trailer also has the biggest nostalgia trigger of all: the return of Tum Hi Ho Bandhu. The song instantly transports audiences back to the original film and serves as an emotional shortcut to goodwill. While some may see it as fan service, it undeniably works. In fact, hearing the iconic track significantly elevated the excitement for the film.

Overall, Cocktail 2 raises anticipation without giving away too much, showing attractive leads that seem to have a believable chemistry to them while promising fun, romance, comedy, heartbreak and chaos. Only time will tell if the impact matches that of its predecessor, but the trailer does succeed in generating interest. And that is some triumph in the days when Bollywood rom-coms have become few and far between.
