As the deadline for filing nominations for the Maharashtra Legislative Council elections approaches, high-stakes political drama has gripped the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) camp. Amid intense speculation over whether Uddhav Thackeray would seek a fresh term in the Upper House, the Shiv Sena (UBT) chief has officially withdrawn from the race. Instead, the party has re-nominated former Leader of the Opposition, Ambadas Danve, a move confirmed by Aaditya Thackeray.
This strategic retreat is being viewed as a calculated move to shield the party chief from potential political embarrassment amidst fears of horse-trading and cross-voting.
The ‘Prestige’ Trap and Cross-Voting Fears
Based on the current arithmetic of the Legislative Assembly, the MVA can comfortably secure only one seat. Although the Congress had extended its support to Uddhav Thackeray, the threat of a “political trap” laid by the ruling Mahayuti alliance loomed large.
Political analysts suggest that a defeat for Thackeray due to cross-voting would have been a catastrophic blow to his personal prestige and the party’s morale. Given the current challenges facing the Shiv Sena (UBT), Thackeray reportedly decided that risking such a high-profile defeat was not a viable option. By stepping back at the eleventh hour, he has effectively moved his “pawn” forward to navigate the crossfire.
Risk of Cross-Voting Persists
Despite Thackeray’s withdrawal, the battle is far from over. The Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena has signaled its intent to field a third candidate, ensuring the contest remains volatile. While the immediate threat to Thackeray’s personal reputation has been averted, the UBT candidate, Ambadas Danve, still faces the danger of cross-voting.
However, political observers believe Danve might have a unique advantage. Being a veteran Shiv Sainik, he maintains cordial relations across both factions of the party. There is speculation in political circles that Danve’s personal equations, potentially even reaching across to Eknath Shinde’s camp, might help him secure his seat and navigate the internal turbulence.
