Ahead of the Legislative Council elections, internal tensions within the alliance have come out in the open, with a dispute over a single seat now raising serious questions about the unity of the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA). After the Uddhav Thackeray faction of the Shiv Sena announced Ambadas Danve as its candidate, the Congress responded aggressively by deciding to field its own candidate, bringing the alliance’s internal discord to the forefront.
Although the Congress had initially agreed to support former Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray’s name, in the final stages Aaditya Thackeray announced Danve’s candidature. This decision was also backed by Sanjay Raut. However, the unilateral move has upset the Congress, with state president Harshvardhan Sapkal clearly stating that the party will field its own candidate for the seat, dealing a setback to Uddhav Thackeray.
These developments have created a serious dilemma for the MVA. Given the current strength in the Legislative Assembly the alliance can comfortably secure only one seat. In such a scenario, if both parties field separate candidates, it could lead to a division of votes, ultimately benefiting the ruling Mahayuti.
This conflict is no longer limited to just one seat but is being seen as having wider implications for the future of the MVA. Amid these developments, Uddhav Thackeray faces a tough choice whether to step back to preserve alliance unity or to take on Congress in a direct contest. With the nomination deadline fast approaching, the decisions taken in the next few hours are likely to shape the future course of the alliance.
