Move Aims to Accelerate Rural Housing Mission; States Asked to Support Landless Beneficiaries
New Delhi: Union Rural Development Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan on Thursday released a Mother Sanction of ₹10,021.42 crore under the Pradhan Mantri Awaas Yojana–Gramin (PMAY-G) for 12 states through a video conference, giving a major boost to the Centre’s mission of providing permanent housing to every eligible rural family.
The sanction was released in the presence of Minister of State for Rural Development Dr. Chandra Sekhar Pemmasani. Ministers and senior officials from several states also participated in the virtual event.
The states receiving the funds are Assam, Chhattisgarh, Gujarat, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Jharkhand, Karnataka, Kerala, Punjab, Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu, and Uttar Pradesh.
Addressing the gathering, Chouhan said Prime Minister Narendra Modi is committed to ensuring that no poor family in the country is forced to live in a kutcha house. He noted that PMAY-G, launched in 2016, has played a key role in fulfilling this vision.
Against the scheme’s target of 4.95 crore houses, approvals have been granted for 3.91 crore houses so far, while more than 3.05 crore homes have already been completed, he said. “An improved house leads to a better quality of life. We are not merely constructing houses; we are creating homes equipped with essential facilities such as roads, electricity, drinking water, LPG connections, and toilets,” the minister said.
Chouhan also praised states for introducing innovative measures such as helplines, grievance redressal systems, rainwater harvesting initiatives, livelihood support through self-help groups, and mason training programmes, which have helped speed up implementation of the scheme. Highlighting the scheme’s contribution to women’s empowerment, he said nearly 75 percent of houses sanctioned under PMAY-G are registered in the name of women or jointly owned, strengthening their social and economic security.
The minister urged states to take special steps to provide land to eligible landless families so that they too can benefit from the housing scheme. He also called for timely resolution of pending grievances, faster completion of under-construction houses, and effective utilisation of the funds released. Chouhan stressed that states yet to complete housing approvals for the 2024-25 and 2025-26 targets should do so by June 30, 2026.
During the meeting, he also appealed to PMAY-G beneficiaries and implementing agencies to participate in the “Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam” campaign on World Environment Day, June 5, by planting at least one sapling. Rural Development Secretary Rohit Kansal said the Centre had already released ₹11,121 crore as Mother Sanction for 2026-27 and that the additional ₹10,021 crore released on Thursday would further strengthen housing construction efforts. He added that the target for house construction this year is nearly three times higher than last year and will be achieved through coordinated efforts between the Centre and states.
The PMAY-G scheme continues to transform rural India by ensuring that eligible families receive permanent housing along with access to essential amenities, contributing to a more dignified and secure standard of living.
