As Bengal braces for a new political chapter under BJP leadership, Union Home Minister Amit Shah announced the decision at a legislative meeting in Kolkata, chaired today.

As West Bengal is poised for a major political transition with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) set to form its Government in the state, the BJP leadership has officially announced Suvendu Adhikari to lead the state as its next Chief Minister. The announcement follows the party’s decisive performance in the Assembly elections, positioning BJP to form government in Bengal for the first time.

The formal swearing-in ceremony is expected to take place on May 9 in Kolkata, where senior national leaders, party workers, and supporters are anticipated to gather in large numbers for what is being viewed as a defining moment in the state’s political history.

Adhikari’s elevation marks a dramatic rise in Bengal politics. Once a key figure in the Trinamool Congress, he emerged over the past few years as one of the BJP’s strongest faces in the state, playing a central role in expanding the party’s organisational and electoral footprint across Bengal. His leadership during the election campaign is widely believed to have contributed significantly to the BJP’s breakthrough victory.

Adhikari, also son of Sisir Adhikari, has also been an active political leader and former Member of Parliament.Adhikari gained statewide prominence during the historic Nandigram Movement, where he emerged as a key face opposing land acquisition policies. The movement became a turning point in Bengal politics and significantly strengthened the Trinamool Congress against the then Left Front government.

Party leaders have described the mandate as a call for administrative change, development-focused governance, and a renewed political direction for the state. The BJP leadership has also reiterated its commitment to accelerating infrastructure growth, industrial investment, employment generation, and law-and-order reforms in Bengal.

As per reports, the new West Bengal cabinet is expected to include two deputy chief ministers, with one of the positions likely to be reserved for a woman leader.
