Aadhaar Authentication Made Mandatory for Vehicle Ownership Transfers

Applications May Be Held Up if Names Do Not Match

Mumbai, August 24

A uniform and standardised online workflow has been introduced across the country for the transfer of vehicle ownership and the issuance of No Objection Certificates (NOCs). Aadhaar authentication of the applicant has now been made a mandatory part of the process for availing these services.

The Union Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has prescribed a revised procedure for vehicle ownership transfers and NOC services as part of its efforts to implement uniform and standardised online transport services across all States and Union Territories. The revised workflow has received approval from the competent authority and is now being followed for processing applications.

If the name mentioned on a vehicle’s Registration Certificate (RC) does not match the name on the applicant’s Aadhaar card, the vehicle system displays an alert advising the applicant to update the PIN code through an Aadhaar centre or visit the Regional Transport Office (RTO) or use mobile authentication to access contactless services.

Vehicle owners are therefore required to ensure that the name on their Aadhaar card matches the name recorded on the vehicle’s Registration Certificate. Once the discrepancy has been rectified, the necessary corrections must be made in the vehicle registration system and the Aadhaar authentication process completed. Only thereafter can an application be submitted for transfer of vehicle ownership or issuance of an NOC.

The revised changes in the vehicle registration system have been implemented across the country. To ensure smooth and contactless access to various online vehicle-related services, vehicle owners have also been advised to keep their Aadhaar details including their name, address and mobile phone number updated.

The Transport Department has urged vehicle owners to ensure that their Aadhaar information remains accurate and up to date so that vehicle-related services can be accessed without unnecessary delays.
