Awarapan 2 triggers distribution war ahead of release

There is definitely some form of excitement built up for Awarapan 2 already, and it has very little to do with teasers or songs (at least for now). The Emraan Hashmi film, which is set to release in theatres on August 14, 2026, has already become one of the top talked-about movies in the trade circuit, thanks to an old-school phenomenon Bollywood hasn’t seen in a while: a full-blown scramble for distribution rights.

Buzz around the Awarapan sequel is spreading like wildfire, leaving fans anxiously waiting for details about this long-awaited follow-up to 2007’s hit film. Emraan Hashmi reprises his role as ‘Shivam’ in the sequel, which is set to release in theatres during Independence Day weekend, definitely a good move for maximizing revenues from this film. The success of the original Awarapan was not your typical blockbuster at the box office; it quietly built a cult following thanks to its popular music and emotional depth and the brooding performance by Emraan Hashmi.

In addition to fans being excited over the sequel being created, it has been reported that many prominent studios and movie distributors are competing with each other to obtain rights to show the film legally, turning it into one of the most sought-after titles in the market right now. At the center of it all is producer Mukesh Bhatt, who is said to be receiving multiple offers as interest continues to grow.

Lately, we have seen streaming deals being one of the major factors, even when the film is getting ready for a theatrical release. With Awarapan 2 dominating the headlines for months before its release, it is already clear that this Emraan Hashmi starrer is being seen as a theatrical event, not just another release.

There are a lot of people excited about this project due to a unique combination of factors: familiarity with the title, music elements from the first film, and the return of lead actor Emraan Hashmi.

While the film draws heavily on nostalgia, it now comes with a new female lead, Disha Patani. The film’s director, Nitin Kakkar, will carry the emotional and thematic elements of the original into the new story, and he is expected to do so in a much larger and grander way for the new generation.

The Independence Day weekend is perfect because this is an important period during which the box office in India is at its peak, and confirming the release date indicates that they have confidence in the movie. This movie is going to be marketed as a major blockbuster that is not only a nostalgic continuation of a highly popular film, but is also going to be a major theatrical draw for the year, when there are so many competing films coming out.

What makes this moment particularly interesting is what it says about the industry. Two decades after a cult-status film has received this much buzz is far more than just the fans of that original cult film; it shows you how content ages, finds new audiences, and eventually resurfaces in a much bigger format than the original.

At this point in time, Awarapan 2 has not even started any marketing for the film. However, with all the excitement that is building around it and all the news that is being generated through the many distributors that have been trying to get the film prior to its exhibition, it has already accomplished what most films struggle to do – being unmissable before audiences have even seen a frame.

Come August, that suspense will finally be put to the test.
