Some brands are almost synonymous with its category, and Tesla is one of those. Now, Indians everywhere will be able to experience Tesla Inc. with the brand planning to enter the Indian market next year. Due to reduced import charges and logistical considerations, the world’s most known electric vehicle and renewable energy company decided to import cars from China at first. Union Road Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari said that the US electric car company will begin sales operations in India in early 2021, followed by an expansion into electric car assembly and manufacturing.

Tesla’s entry may coincide with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s growing emphasis on encouraging the use and manufacture of electric automobiles. Elon Musk, Tesla’s CEO, said in October that the company might enter the Indian market in 2021. In the first phase, the Palo Alto, California-based company will introduce the Model 3 sedan (starting at Rs. 55 lakh) and Model Y SUV.

Tesla is considering not only selling cars in India, but also increasing volume in the long run. The company’s next lowest-cost model from its global range would provide the most figures. If the government doesn’t put too many duties on particular parts and subsystems, the tiny e-car could be a locally made vehicle.

Tesla’s entry into India could be the tipping point for electric vehicles in India. Elon Musk, the CEO of Tesla, previously stated that a $25,000 electric car with a next-generation battery is already in the works for worldwide markets. He claimed that the cost of its battery cells and packs would be drastically reduced.

Elon Musk had earlier said he would love to be in India. The electric car maker is engaged in discussions with the government for temporary relief from import restrictions and duties until it sets up a local manufacturing facility, but no headway has been made. India’s automotive industry is gearing up for this challenge with a slew of launches lined up over the next year, and the Indian buyer might have a look to look forward to in times to come.
