Vaibhav Sooryavanshi eyes full India debut soon

In Indian cricket, records have a way of outlasting the cricketers who set them. Sachin Tendulkar made his international debut on November 15, 1989, aged 16 years and 205 days, against Pakistan in Karachi. That record has stood for over three decades, through generations of prodigies and fast-track selections. It may not survive the summer of 2026.

According to a report in The Indian Express, citing a BCCI source, Vaibhav Sooryavanshi’s name has been shortlisted for India’s T20I series against Ireland in June. The selectors, led by Ajit Agarkar, have reportedly been tracking the 15-year-old Rajasthan Royals opener closely through IPL 2026, and the Ireland tour, a low-pressure bilateral series that has historically served as a testing ground for younger players, is being considered as the right moment to hand him his maiden cap. Should that happen, Sooryavanshi would become India’s youngest-ever international cricketer.

The numbers demand the conversation. Sooryavanshi has scored 200 runs from five IPL 2026 games at a strike rate north of 260, currently holding the Orange Cap. He announced himself to the season with a 15-ball fifty against Chennai Super Kings, followed it with 78 off 26 balls against RCB, and earlier in 2025 had scored a 35-ball century against Gujarat Titans that made him the youngest centurion in IPL history. This is not hype in search of a justification. The performances are real, and they have been sustained across two IPL seasons now.

Sooryavanshi’s broader cricket story is remarkable in its own right. Born in Bihar, he made his first-class debut at 12 years and 284 days, his T20 debut at 13, and was signed by Rajasthan Royals at 13 for Rs 1.1 crore before most cricket fans had even heard his name. He won the Player of the Tournament award at the 2026 ICC Under-19 World Cup in Zimbabwe, scoring 439 runs across seven innings, including a 175 off 80 balls in the final against England. The ICC’s minimum age regulations, introduced in 2020, meant he had to wait until turning 15 before becoming eligible for senior international cricket. He crossed that threshold on March 27, 2026. Three days later, he hit a fifty in 15 balls in the IPL.

The chorus of voices calling for his inclusion has grown substantially. IPL chairman Arun Dhumal publicly posted that Sooryavanshi deserved to debut as India’s youngest, directly addressing chief selector Agarkar. Former India captain Anil Kumble backed a fast-track approach, comparing the situation to Tendulkar’s own path into the side. Michael Vaughan, never shy of a hot take, went further and suggested Sooryavanshi be included for England’s white-ball tour as well.

There are, of course, caveats. Sooryavanshi’s age has been questioned in some quarters, and questions around his date of birth have lingered in the background of his career despite BCCI-mandated bone density tests. The India T20I setup is also far from a straightforward door to push open, with competition for opening slots intense.

But selectors have a habit of moving quickly when the case becomes impossible to ignore. Ireland in June is a low-stakes stage for the highest-stakes introduction. If the selectors do pull the trigger, Sooryavanshi will not just be making his debut. He will be stepping over the longest-standing milestone in Indian cricket’s modern age.
