MUMBAI: Known for striking terror into the hearts of adulterators and hotel owners since taking charge of the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), dynamic IAS officer Tukaram Mundhe has now turned his attention toward school canteens and mid-day meals. Following a series of aggressive raids on sweet shops, hotels, and milk producers, those compromising with the health of school children are set to face severe consequences under Mundhe’s leadership. The FDA has geared up to inspect the quality of food served to students across municipal and private schools in Mumbai. In line with this, a crucial high-level meeting was held with school principals, self-help groups (SHGs), and education officers.
Crackdown on Negligence in School Meals: Strict Enforcement of Food Safety Laws
The proactive move comes in the wake of past shocking incidents where maggots and other hazardous substances were found in the mid-day meals and khichdi served at municipal schools, triggering massive controversies. Taking serious note of these lapses, the FDA has placed private and civic school canteens, as well as the kitchen sheds supplying mid-day meals, squarely on its radar. The administration has initiated swift measures to ensure the effective implementation of the Food Safety and Standards Regulations, 2020. During the meeting, FDA Assistant Commissioner P. R. Singerwad issued a stern warning, stating that food safety, hygiene, and the provision of a nutritious, balanced diet are non-negotiable at the school level. He cautioned that direct and stringent legal action would be taken against anyone failing to comply with the mandated standards.
Lawmakers Demand No Transfer for Mundhe Amid Ongoing Action
Under Mundhe’s resolute direction, the FDA has executed numerous high-profile raids across the state, even cancelling the licenses of several renowned establishments. This transparent and uncompromising approach has garnered widespread public appreciation. Reflecting this sentiment, multiple lawmakers across party lines demanded during the recently concluded Monsoon Session of the State Legislature that the government should not transfer Tukaram Mundhe out of the FDA. Backed by political support and public approval, Mundhe’s new campaign to ensure the health and safety of school children has sent shockwaves through schools and food-supplying self-help groups across the region.
